Shaun Wright-Phillips intends to stay with Manchester City despite Sunday's UEFA Cup heartbreak.
Robbie Fowler's injury-time penalty miss cost City a place in Europe and allowed Middlesbrough to progress following a breathtaking 1-1 draw at Eastlands. It was a cruel way to end the campaign for new Blues boss Stuart Pearce, whose side deserved victory but were ultimately unable to grab a winner after Kiki Musampa had levelled Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's thunderbolt free-kick. Amid the disappointment, there was one major piece of good news as the pacy winger confirmed he has no plans to quit despite reported interest from Chelsea and Arsenal. "I signed a four-year contract last August and when I signed it was with the intention of staying with the club," said the £20million-rated England international. "That is where I want to be and until my contract runs out I am not thinking of moving. It is my home. The fans have really taken to me and I think that is because I have come through the ranks. "I came here when I was 16 and went from the youth team to the first team and the fans supported me all the way. I am settled here." The statement should send Pearce into the summer break in a slightly happier mood. The former full-back knows Wright-Phillips is a crucial part of his long-term plan for the Manchester club. And when he finally gets chance to reflect on an astonishing end to the campaign, the former England skipper will also realise he delivered City's best ever Premiership finish and their longest unbeaten top-flight run since 1992. A day of heartbreak for City yesterday but fans will be bouyed by the news that their most prized asset is staying put, for the time being at least. |
