Harry to stick by Gomes |
|
Despite a series of high profile and costly mistakes this season, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp vows to stand by £9m Gomes. Redknapp said "His record at PSV suggests he was world class. I have to keep believing in him."
"Our goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert has to work with him and get into his head this week." "But we’ve got to keep believing in him because that’s it, he’s the goalkeeper." "It ain’t no good me caning him because I’ve got nothing else." Gomes is costing Spurs precious points however, and his confidence is completely shot. Come January, Harry will almost certainly be looking to replace Gomes if his form doesn't improve. One option would be to try tempting Sir Alex Ferguson to loan out Ben Foster. Is Harry right to stick by Heurelho Gomes, or should he select Sanchez to replace the Brazilian in the starting XI? |

harry is very much right when he says his psv form proves he is potentially worldclass
but, and this is a big but but i suppose Gomes is never become good in england if he is never given another chance |

He needs a shrink, not a goalkeeping coach. His technical ability is top notch its his confidence thats been shot to hell.
And now every team we play will be targeting him more than ever, taking potshots at him all day and putting pressure on him at corners more so than normal. I dont get how Harry says hes got 'nothing else', what does tham mean about Sanchez? Why the hell do we have him at the club then??? I know it doesnt mean hes a great keeper but the guy has won the Champions League so he cant be ALL bad. Personally I think Gomes should be given a spell on the sidelines to get his head together, from all i know we have a competent backup in Sanchez so lets give him a run in the side. |

I agree.
Gomes has a fundamental flaw in his game that's been there for years. That isn't just going to get ironed out overnight. Let the goalkeeping Coaches work with him whilst Sanchez gets his chance. |

what a vote of confidence! Redknapp knows as well as i do the man is a joke. Sanchez is obviously poor as well by Redknapps comments. i told you he would stick with Gomes. |

Good and wise decision by Harry.
See harry knows better about the players mind set than anyone of us. He knows in what mental condition that player is. Gomes has a handful of Goalkeeping skills, if not next match may be next to next match he will show the world that he is a big name goalkeeper. I still believe that Gomes is a good goalkeeper, he just needs time and some good words. |

Well, somebody's paid the price for Gomes - Goalkeeping Coach Hans Leitert has left the Club.

unless he has told Gomes to act like a clown i really dont think its his responsibility. surely Gomes makes his own decisions on coming out etc. more passing of the buck a return for the corrupt Hans Segers perhaps? |

well i am not a manager or football expert ...Harry above says Sanchez is not good enough to replace Gomes ...or thinks it , come back Paul Robinson ...all is forgiven ..... |

Of course it's responsibilty - he was the Goalkeeping Coach ffs! The same way it was Ramos' fault for the team not performing, because Ramos was the Coach of the team |

if only football were that simple. its not the same in the slightest. Ramos was the orchestrator of the team. he picked the players, the squad, the formation, the style of play, the tactics. he could decide to do whatever he wanted with the team. therefore results were his responsibility. he had the power to change things around if it was going wrong, which it did and he didnt. the goalkeeper coach can only help train an already professional goalkeeper to be at his sharpest. he can not compensate for the keeper throwing the ball in his goal and some of his other stupid rush of blood to the head moments. i would imagine the coach has tried to teach him the basics of aerial abilities while goalkeeping and perhaps if he hasnt then he should be sacked. personally i think Gomes deserves the sack more than the coach. |

Yep, train a goalkeeper to be at his sharpest. Only Gomes hasn't been. That's Leitert's responsibility.
He's been at the Club since May - the same time as Gomes, so he's had plenty of time to work with him and iron out these basic errors. Yet Gomes is still making basic flaws. With proper training Gomes could be a good goalkeeper - just like he used to be at PSV. For now though, I think a rest and focussing on training would be just what the Brazilian needs right now. |

so Gomes is performing badly because of his goalkeeping coach? id say Gomes has been pretty sharp in terms of shot stopping and things where you dont actually need a brain or common sense. its when he has to think for himself that he comes out looking a fool. |

Well this is my point: his natural reactions and reflexes are brilliant, and that’s something you can’t train. Either you have brilliant reactions or you don’t – you can’t teach someone to react faster.
But the other part of his keeping – “where he has to think for himself” – is where he’s making a fool of himself. When and when not to come for crosses. Catching or punching. Handling. Distribution. You can teach someone to think better i.e. make better decisions. And this is the Goalkeeping Coach’s job. |
||||||||
|
|
|||||||||
|
of course you can train faster reactions, faster speed and hone better reflexes. otherwise what would be the point of keepers and even boxers training? keepers work on their reflexes and reaction time every session. certainly at every decent level ive ever known. you can tell somebody something until you are blue in the face. if the person you are telling is a moron and does his own thing even the greatest teacher in the land is helpless. Gomes should know when to come and go. his judgement is appalling. only he makes those judgements. if he had a brain he would know that is wrong and not do it. even the great Mr Miyagi needed a willing and able pupil. Gomes is no Daniel Son |

Go-mess is shite!
I've had enough of him. He is costing us vital points. Robbo was axed last season after less than this. Go-mess can pull off the spectacular, but he is too error prone and we just can't afford that. Give Sanchez a go, or Ben Alnwick who is finishing his loan spell this weekend. I think in January we will bring in ben Foster on loan for the rest of the season. |

Goalkeepers have excellent natural reactions anyway – if they were poor, they wouldn’t be a Goalkeeper. They train to keep their reactions sharp, keep themselves fit, stay alert (concentration), work on decision making etc etc. But a Coach won’t be able to significantly improve a Goalkeeper’s reactions, if at all. As you say, Gomes’ judgement (decision making) is shocking. But you can improve someone’s judgement with Coaching. This Leitert guy has had some time to improve his judgement but obviously it hasn’t worked. I don’t see what’s wrong with bringing in another Coach to see if he can improve Gomes’ judgement and concentration. Personally, I’m not too confident whether Gomes will improve as he’s had these problems for a few years now – maybe it isn’t Leitert’s fault and it is just the Goalkeeper. But seeing as Gomes will be with us for at least until January, then it makes sense for Harry to try someone else with him. Hopefully, Gomes will improve his judgement like David James has. Here’s hoping anyway! PS – Gomes might not be a Daniel Son, but is Leitert a great Mr. Miyagi? |
