Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has issued an astonishing rebuke to Sven-Goran Eriksson by insisting the England boss "sometimes says too much too often."
Gibson was responding to Eriksson's claim this week that the next England manager, come the day when the Swede finally steps down from the post, would be an Englishman. Boro manager Steve McClaren, who currently works as Eriksson's assistant, would appear to be in pole position for the role and the obvious candidate. Gibson, though, feels Eriksson should keep his opinions to himself, and told Radio 5 Live: "I have met Sven on numerous occasions and sometimes he says too much too often." He added: "I think he should really get on with doing his job. I'm not aware it is the role of the current England manager to select the next England manager. "What I am aware of is that Steve McClaren works with Eriksson in the England set up, and has an ambition to one day be England manager. But he will know when that time is right. "He is in his fourth year of management in the Premiership and I suspect that Steve would consider the next appointment as too early for him. "What I do know is that he is our manager at this time. He is enjoying his role at our football club, and we have enjoyed having him and we've talked substantially about an extension to his current contract." |
