"News that Shola Ameobi is yet to start pre-season training due to discomfort in his hip following an injection has added extra impetus to our striker signing quest.

With Shearer and Chopra now gone and Owen on the injury list with Dyer, Glenn Roeder currently has only two fully fit forwards with first team experience.

Both James Milner and Albert Luque have been seen more as wide players in their careers to date on Tyneside, but have experience of playing through the middle in an advanced role.

In 23 starts and 25 appearances in all competitions, Milner has found the net three times - once from close range against West Brom in the Premiership and twice in the Intertoto.

Meanwhile our Spanish friend has started eight games and come on in nine others, his only competitive success in front of goal memorably coming at the mackems."

Isnt Luque looking for a move back to Spain?

I think this could be his chance to prove himself... the first team place is his for the taking while Owen is injured.

I dont think we can afford to let Luque go, so i think he will stay.

Hopefully he will build upon his last appearance in a black and white shirt when he scored at the Gallowgate end at Shearer's testimonal (even celebrated Shearer like with the one hand in the air)
