Sydney FC coach Terry Butcher believes Dwight Yorke will star as an attacking midfielder or striker in the Hyundai A-League after watching the Sydney FC captain in action at the recent World Cup.

Butcher watched all three Trinidad & Tobago matches and was in the stadium when Yorke and his countrymen took on England and held them at bay for 83 minutes.

The newly appointed Sydney FC coach also allayed fears that the Trinidad & Tobagon captain would not be returning to Sydney FC for the second season of his contract.

Butcher spoke with Yorke while he was in Germany after watching the former Manchester United striker more than hold his own against the England midfield, lauded as the best in the world before the World Cup.

While Butcher believes Yorke did a tremendous job in the holding midfield role for Trinidad at the World Cup, he will be employed in a more attacking role when the Hyundai A-League starts on August 27.

“Dwight was tremendous at the World Cup playing that (deep midfielder) role but I believe he has more to offer us in attack and that’s where I think he will be playing for Sydney FC,” Butcher said.

“For Trinidad he had a role to play but for Sydney FC I believe I can surround him with young midfielders, which will allow him to play a major part in our attack.

“He still has plenty to offer offensively and that is where he will be when we start our season.”

Butcher also said he would give Yorke some time to recover from what was an intense 12 months, which included a World Cup qualification schedule, the World Cup itself, the A-League and the FIFA Club World Championships, as well as settling in a new country (Australia).

“Dwight needs a rest and he will have some time off before coming back to Sydney,” Butcher said. “He had a season with Sydney FC and then went straight to Manchester United and then onto the World Cup.

“We (along with assistant coach Ian Crook) have spoken to him and we all agree it is in the best interests of Dwight and the team that he has a break.

“He will be back in a few weeks and we will be setting him to be ready to go for the start of the A-League.”

Butcher’s comments are music to the ears of Sydney FC fans with the start of its A-League title defence just 54 days away.

Sydney FC opens it Hyundai A-League season against the Central Coast Mariners in a grand final replay at Aussie Stadium on August 27 at 5pm.

I hope he plays Yorke in behind two strikers, that way he can more easily drop deep while still having opportunities to strike. While hopefully we should have better attacking options, I think the middle of the park is still a weakness and Yorke will be needed to do some of the Gattuso-like work he did so well last season. When you have a player of his quality in a league like ours, you're not going to shackle him to too specific a role.

I'd rather Yorkie attacking than defending- Play Yorkie upfront, Brosque in behind him and we're set.
