Hi All
I have been a lurker for a while and enjoy the debates
I have a problem with the BBC and their coverage of the world cup
It just seems that they are commentating on the 4 year event as if it was an English only audience
What right has Motson got to comment on the Portuguese player Ricardo's reception tonight .
Impartiality is the word I am after and to be honest I would as a viwer like somebody to discuss the game only and not what the linesman had for breakfast in 1966

Your Thoughts

I don’t even want to mention Shearer and Wright as I can do without blood pressure problems this late in the evening

I think you'll have a few people agreeing with you there mate, me for one.
There have been a few comments about this under other topics - their bias is what puts many non-English like myself against the England team - not that I personally dislike the English team, but hoped that when they got knocked out they'd shut up about England and talk about other teams.
No chance though Sad

I assume you're not English - perhaps you can tell us about yourself in the newcomer section Smile

I will I will
I am listening to Shearer talking about diving as if it were something he has never ever witnessed or done in his life
Michael Owen is the best diver in the world Alan although he plays for your team or at least is paid to play and your partner in the studio was a good teacher.

especially when England were undoubtedly the most disappointing side at the world cup.....

Pundits like Shearer and Wright only really understand english football. John Motson is just too old to be commentating. Have to say though, i'm a big fan of Martin O'Neill and it was brilliant seeing the thoughts of Brazil and Milan legend Leonardo.

I don't usually listen to the commentary if I can help it (I go for the match view if I have access to digital) and turn off at half-time. But I did happen to hear Shearer say "English players never cheat" the other day LaughingShocked

Don't be too hard on old Al. Remember that time he kicked Neil Lennon in the head? Lennon's head probably felt like Carvalho's nuts after Rooney massaged them with his studs. That's what puts us above the foreigners - we might be thugs, but we're good honest thugs.

Joking aside, I would say that putting yourself about the way that Shearer did, and Brian Robson beofre him, and relying on the fact that you are England captain to protect you from the inevitable red and yellow cards that would come your way if you weren't is a form of cheating.

As for the BBC commentary/presentation as a whole, it wasn't quite as excruciating as ITV, but still absolutely bloody awful. Apart from the England hype (until we lose and then, of course, we were never good enough to win) they ruin every game Brazil plays by oohing and aahing over the most mundane skills, taking it for granted that they're going to win, etc, etc, so that I find myself wanting Brazil out just to shut them up. And as for Motty- AAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

you have to expect some bias in england, but it is in good humour. If you do not like it watch the games on the internet, or with no volume. I like Ian Wrights passion for England!!

I just read this in today's Times, in an article about BBC's coverage:
Apparently Alan Hansen said, sometime after Portugal beat England "Between them, Germany, Italy, France and Portugal would have a handful of players who who would make England's first-choice side." Shocked

How many tv license fees go to pay this "expert"?

I never watch BBC coverage because they are all very biased. Hansen is alrite sometimes but thats about it. RTE's coverage is alot more neutral & funny & honest

Funnily 2 of the team are former Irish players and one is a Scot..

Maybe they should be like Sven and not give a shite..

People are just taking one or two comments and making a meal of them

I've heard commentators from other countries and the BBC are pussy cats compared to the bias of other Nations commentators

If they said anything anti-english or anything to down hearten the english public the BBC chiefs would have a fit.

In my opinion, BBC commentators hilariously lack impartiality. The news they put on their website aren't any better, but these aren't nearly as biased as what the commentators enjoy saying. One of them said, referring to the fact that some Portuguese players, including Ronaldo, approached the referee after the aggression Rooney committed against R. Carvalho: "Look at the Portuguese players! We [England] never do that - try to put pressure on the referee. What are we? Are we too honest?" The feeling of moral superiority doesn't suit them well. I suggest that they focused more on football because, after all, that's what they're expected to do.
And not only BBC, but the English media in general should be ashamed for feeding this irrationality and feeling of anti-Portugal and anti-Ronaldo of some supporters! Not to mention the rude things they've written about Portugal, the country.
I had always heard that the English media were a mess (with all those polemics around Mourinho and so on), but the things I've read, seen and heard lately are simply despicable! Shocked

That commentator you are on about was Alan Shearer mate , you might have heard of him over in Portugal, more goals in the Premiership than any other player...

He scored as many goals in the Premiership as Ronaldo has taken dives , 260 or so Laughing

BBC = British Broadcasting... channel/company?

I generally dont watch BBC or ITV because we have RTE in Ireland who show every game. I turn it over to BBC during breaks thoug and theyre just so biased and blind. You wouldnt believe the difference in oppinion between BBc and RTE. Like tdv said, RTE is much better, its more honest, neutral and funny. Theyre not afraid to criticize people at all and theyre always taking the p!ss out of BBC and Sky Sports which is funny
