Kenya's cash-strapped football federation has turned to athletics hero Paul Tergat as it struggles to raise money to fulfil the remaining 2006 World Cup qualifiers.
Tergat, the world marathon record holder, has launched a fund-raising initiative for the Harambee Stars with a personal donation of $1,000.

"As a Kenyan I found it very disheartening to read about the frequent reports on the financial troubles encountered by the Harambee Stars," Tergat said.

Kenya's national team players were locked out of their training base in Nairobi last week due to numerous outstanding bills.

The Harambee Stars are preparing for next month's World Cup qualifier against Guinea in Conakry.

Tergat becomes the second athlete to lend his services to Kenya's most popular sport after the legendary distance runner Kip Keino.

An interim body led by Keino was appointed to run Kenyan football in the aftermath of the lifting of an indefinite ban imposed by Fifa last December.

Tergat said his fund-raising committee had set a target of $160,000 to cater for the two vital matches against Guinea and Morocco in June.
