In reality, I think that Shepherd is holding back on realeasing any funds to roeder until he knows whether or not we will be in the UEFA cup next season.
The sort of players we have been linked to such as Kuyt, Wrigh Phillips, Bent etc will all probably cost us upwards of £10Mill which obviously freddy doesnt think we can justify spending without the guaranteed income that european football brings. If we get into Europe then maybe we can attract supposed 'bigger' names to the club espec as i doubt that Glenn Roeders profile is not big enough to make big name stars want to play for him. I suppose that is why Shearer is our 'sporting ambassador' to help boost the profile but it appears that his World Cup Trip hasnt led to any players signing up. Personally i am slightly disappointed that there hasn't been a 'clear-out' over the summer since Glenn got the job. Players like Butt, Boumsong, Babayaro, Elliott, Faye, Carr etc in my opinion should have gone along with their big Wages! we may have even got a bob or two for them. I appreciate that Elliott and Carr at least tried for the club last season but im nt sure they are good enough to help us guarantee a top 6 place in the league every year, not when you look at teams like Tottenham and Portsmouth strengthening massively. Getting into the UEFA cup must be a priority for us or i fear we have another mid-table fiasco of a season ahead! |
