This year Olympiacos seem on great form and with a bit of luck they could challenge for something good in Europe (best they could manage so far is a place in the quarterfinals).
I hate to be pessimistic, but i'd say they've already won the title in Greece this year. They have the best team by far. Plus, PAO's playmaker (Eki Gonzalez) was injured in practice a couple of days ago and will be out for 6 months. Things are not looking good. AEK will be much better this year, they managed to sign a couple of talented players from Iraklis (Lagos and Kapetanos) and they have a decent coach (Lorenzo Sera Ferrer). Again, i hate to be pessimistic, but PAO might finish 3rd this year too. PAOK has huge financial problems right now and unless some rich guy buys the club things are looking grim. The players haven't been paid for a while now and i don't think they can keep waiting for much longer. Iraklis has managed to build a decent team last year but they sold their best player (Lagos) so i can't really say what they'll do this year. Aris was relegated last year, but they have a huge fanbase so it wasn't difficult to climb back up with their support. These teams, along with Larisa, Xanthi, Atromitos and Egaleo should be the top 10 teams this season, but as always no one will give a damn about anything other than the teams between Olumpiacos, PAO and AEK. It's just the way things are in Greek football these days. |

Gonzalez, out for 6 months!

Luckily they bought this Brazilian from Malaga (Bovio) the same day so he could carry some of the weight in Eki's absence. He doesn't sound like a very good player, but he might come in handy.
Gonzalez is by far our best player, but he has a very short fuse and that costs the team sometimes. On the other hand, i do like his fighting spirit. If only he could control his temper and focus on the game. In Eki's absence, i reckon Romero (another new signing) will be our most influential player. That's the way it looks from the friendlies anyway. |

PAO have just announced the signing of Victor Sanchez, from Deportivo La Coruna. He's a very good (right) winger who was given a renewal offer which he deemed "inadequate" and decided not to sign. He played for Real Madrid for 3 years, then Santander for a year and his final destination in Spain was Deportivo where he has been for the last 7 seasons and has usually been able to find a place in the starting squad.
So, on paper i'm happy with this transfer, but let's wait and see how he adapts to the team and the new league. Hopefully he can help us return to the Champions League, if not challenge for the league title. |

Olympiacos could sign Brazilian Ze Roberto in the next few days. I don't think he really wants to go to Greece, but they made him an excellent offer and i wouldn't be surprised if he accepted.
Similarly, Panathinaikos have approached Argentinian midfielder Galletti, but the player says he wants to stay in Spain. However, the offer is extremely favourable for him and his father (a football agent) is trying to convince him to seal the deal. I was very pessimistic about Panathinaikos' chances this year, but with our 3 new signings (Romero, Sanchez, Bovio) and the possibility of Galletti joining us i feel much more confident about what we can achieve. Olympiacos will still walk it though. |

greek footy can get exciting then

It's been a while since they first approached Ze Roberto, i think even before the World Cup. Back then AC Milan wanted him too so Olympiacos only had an outside chance but now that Milan have taken a step back Olympiacos looks the likeliest destination, especially with fellow Brazilians Rivaldo and Julio Cezar there. I did hear that Leverkusen will make an offer today or tomorrow though so it's definitely NOT a sure thing just yet.
As for whether or not Greek footy can get exciting, Panathinaikos has a better schedule than Olympiakos at the beginning of the season so unless they take full advantage of that i'd say that the whole thing will be over before Christmas. So not too much excitement if that happens. I do think that Olympiakos can do something good in Europe though. |

In the last 4 days the Ze Roberto deal seems to have fallen through. The team issued an announcement saying they were no longer interested in signing him. The player himself hasn't announced where he wants to go yet.
Also, the Galletti deal fell through for Panathinaikos, so the replacement for our injured playmaker Gonzalez will more than likely be Andreas Ivanschitz, the 23-year-old Austrian midfielder (and captain of the national side). Good strong left foot and can also play as a central midfielder where we need him. |

How much will he cost PAO? |

It's a loan. Apparently, even though he's considered a great young player in Austria, he's not in good terms with Mathaus/Trappatoni so they will loan him to us for 2 years. I don't think i've read about a buying option after the 2 years though.
