Birmingham have admitted they had made an enquiry about Crystal Palace striker Andrew Johnson, but will now be pursing other transfer targets after being told the England international is not for sale.

Johnson, 24, made an impressive debut in the top flight last season, but despite his 21 Barclays Premiership goals could not save the Eagles from relegation.

Although currently away with England for their brief trip to the United States, speculation surrounding his future continues to grow.

Palace have already made it clear they have no intentions of offloading their prized asset, who was bought from Birmingham in a £750,000 deal three years ago.

There were reports the Blues were ready to offer cash plus former Eagle Clinton Morrison, who went in the opposite direction as part of the original transfer, with chairman David Gold admitting Johnson was "the sort of exciting player we would want".

West Brom, meanwhile, are said to have offered £2million and striker Robert Earnshaw to offer Johnson a swift return to the Premiership, with Newcastle and Liverpool also thought to be tracking his services.

Birmingham, though, maintain a formal bid was never tabled, and that they will not be looking to further their interest.

A statement on the club's official website: "Birmingham City's chief executive Karren Brady can confirm that an enquiry was made to Crystal Palace regarding the availability of their striker Andrew Johnson.

"However, Crystal Palace made it clear that Andrew Johnson is not for sale and at no point was a bid actually placed.

"As far as we are concerned that is the end of the matter and manager Steve Bruce will continue to look elsewhere at other transfer targets."
