Michael Schumacher has announced his retirement from Formula One, just moments after taking victory in the Italian Grand Prix.

With the seven-times world champion stood atop the Monza podium after scoring the 90th victory of his career, Ferrari released a statement saying that the 37-year-old's career will end this season.

And Schumacher looks increasingly likely to bow out in style, the combination of his victory and the retirement of Fernando Alonso reducing the latter's championship lead to just two points.

With stewards forcing him to start tenth on the grid after he was adjudged to have blocked Schumacher's team-mate Felipe Massa in qualifying, Alonso climbed to third place before his engine failed on lap 44.

I will miss Schumacher even if Raikkonen will replace him worthily. I hope Schumi will finish his carreer with a world title.

Great Racer yes, but True Legend no.

He is a complete and utter arrogant beep. Hes a cheat and a liar, such a shame that so much talent was given to such a horrible little man.

I wish gingerness upon all his unborn children.

That said, he is the greatest driver we have ever seen.

A great racing driver but an arrogant sod. I'll always remember him for these two incidents , knocking Damon Hill out the race and costing him the championship and doing the same thing to Jaques V but failing to stop him winning it. Schumacher failed to apologize for the two incidents and went down in my estimations because of it.

Schumacher is as good driving as arrogant and cheater out of the races.

It's amazing how the FIA is trying to give him the last world championship. But Alonso, nowadays, is a better pilot and will win it eventhough he has a worse car.
