The new kings of the draw, Galatasaray, could only take a single point from their game against last placed Denizlispor.

Fenerbahce is back in the clear lead of the Turkish Super League after the fifth round of the competition, helped on the way by a couple of unexpected results. Fener opened the weekend’s matches by beating newly promoted Antalyaspor 4-2 in what was a less than convincing result despite the score line, the Yellow Canaries being less than fluid in attack and at times vulnurable in defence. The win allowed Fener to sit back and watch their rivals go around, or more to the point stumble about.

Going into round five, Kayserispor had an equal share of the lead on the points ladder. By the end of the weekend, it had slipped to third, two points off the pace after being held to a nil all draw by mid table Genclerbirligi on Saturday.

Things were even worse for reigning premier Galatasaray, playing later the same night. The Lions have made a habit of not losing games this season, being the only undefeated side in the competition. However, Galatasaray has also developed the unwanted knack of not winning either, a skill they honed Saturday against last placed Denizlispor by drawing one all, leaving it in ninth spot on the table with just seven points.

On Sunday, Fener smiles could have only broadened when previously third placed Besiktas, which had only been kept off the top of the ladder on goal difference, slumped to a 2-3 defeat at home against the wayward Trabzonspor. The loss dropped the Black and White Eagles down to fourth, three points behind Fener.

Sunday’s other games say Bursaspor thump Sakaryaspor 3-1, Konyaspor beat visiting Sivasspor two nil, Manisaspor thrash Erciyesspor 5-1, Rizespor go down to Ankaraspor 1-2 and Gaziantepspor play out a two all draw with Ankaragucu. After the completion of round five, Fener leads the way on 12 points, followed by Manisaspor on 11, Kayserispor on 10 and Besiktas in fourth place on nine.

Bursaspor, Sakaryaspor, Konyaspor and Genclerbirligi hold down the fifth to eighth rungs on the ladder, all with eight points, followed by Galatasaray and Trabzonspor on seven. Next comes Gaziantepspor and Ankaraspor on six points, with 13th and 14th placed Sivasspor and Erciyesspor both with four points from their five outings. In 15th spot is Ankaragucu with three points, the same tally as Antalyaspor, with Rizespor and last placed Denizlispor both with just two points.
