Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock looks set to take a chance on French left back Sofiane Zaaboub.
The 23-year-old ex-St Etienne man featured for The Owls' reserves in his trial period at the club.
He failed to earn a contract at Preston North End in a similar trial in September, and remains a Bosman free agent.
Sturrock is therefore expected to take a punt on the player and offer him a deal until January.
"If we sign him until the window, it would give us an opportunity to see him and him an opportunity to see us," Sturrock told the club's official website.
"Our left side has been a problem for us. Tom Spurr has done a fantastic job but he is at the stage now where he needs to be taken out and rested.
"Sofiane could fill the void for us and make us much more competitive."
Wednesday are expected to confirm their decision after the weekend's Yorkshire derby with Championship rivals Barnsley.
