Van Persie arrested over rape

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie was arrested on Monday in his native Holland on suspicion of rape.

A spokesperson for the Prosecution Office in Rotterdam revealed the 21-year-old was in police custody.

"He is suspected of rape and our system is different to England. He is in police custody pending investigation," the spokesperson said.

"The alleged rape took place last weekend and he was arrested yesterday."

Van Persie was brought to Highbury for £2.75million for the start of last season, billed as the next Dennis Bergkamp.

The youngster was not a regular in the first team, although he impressed in his 14 starting appearances under manager Arsene Wenger.

He scored 10 goals in all competitions for the Gunners in his first season at the club, although there were questions raised about his temperament after he was sent off against Southampton.

The Dutch starlet has recently stated his desire to commit his future to Arsenal but now he will have to answer claims of rape if he is to have any future in professional football whatsoever.

As I said on the Suker thing. I jsut couldnt im agine this kind of player raping someone. He is just too laid back, he such a good player and seems like a nice lad could not see him doing such a thing. But I hope afc4life is right !

He could get up to 12 years if he is found guilty!

I think it goes without saying that footballers are the same as you and me and any other human being out there. You cannot categorise them on these incidents as until you know the facts, you cant really pass judgement.

Van Persie may well have done something wrong, and if he has, then it should not go unpunished! I hope that this is just another money grabbing liar, however if this poor woman has been assaulted, I feel very very sad for her that she is being slated for doing the right thing. If she was assaulted, you have to remember that she is a Victim of a horrible act of crime. Please keep this in mind when making your posts here.

Just because he is a footballer, it doesn't mean he is instantly innocent.

while i first cannot beleive van persie would be stupid enough to get himself in a position like this , like o dogg has said we do not know the whole story yet . We should probably wait until more is known before presuming who is to blame but lets hope it is all a missunderstanding .

Dont get me wrong if he is found to have done this he should well and truley be punished this is one of the worst crimes a person could commit and i dont agree with it at all,but this sort of thing seems to happen every year or so nowadays sum girl throws herself at a footballer and whens she knocked back hes accused of assault or rape.

Hes being held for another night in a Dutch prision.

Lets just hope justice is done.

I think he means that if he is guilty of the crime, he should do the time - if not, he should be free'd.

wow, they can now hold him for another 14 days as they managed to get a court order from a judge. There must have been some kind of incident but we will have to wait and see what happens.
