Former Hearts head coach John Robertson is the firm favourite for the vacant Ross County manager's post.
County's director of football Alastair Kennedy told BBC Scotland that the Dingwall club have been contacted by Robertson's agent John Colquhoun.
Robertson spent almost two years in charge of local rivals Inverness Caley Thistle before leaving for a brief stint at Hearts in November.
County sacked Alex Smith on Friday and Robertson still has a Highland home.
Colquhoun told the Press & Journal: "It's no secret John is looking for a return to work and he would be open-minded about any position which is available.
"I know John had a very good relationship with Alex Smith and there is no way he would have countenanced any approach while Alex was still in the role."
Robertson was appointed manager of Caley Thistle on Boxing Day in 2002 and won promotion to the SPL in the following season.
