Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie is confident Alain Perrin can get the very best out of wayward winger Laurent Robert.
Pompey completed the signing of the 30-year-old on a three-year deal from Newcastle on Tuesday night, beating Bolton to the player's signature after agreeing an undisclosed fee with the Magpies. His inconsistent performances for Newcastle - coupled with his tendency to make outspoken comments - meant he often frustrated fans, team-mates and managers alike at St James' Park. But Storrie believes the French connection at Fratton Park will help Robert play to his potential week in and week out. "Alain Perrin is a top-quality coach and that helped greatly (in signing Robert). Alain had lots of discussions with Laurent and I think he was very comfortable about how he sees his future here at the club," Storrie said. "Let's not deny he has got some fantastic talent and I think he will be a real star down at Fratton Park. "There is no doubt that having a fellow Frenchman Alain Perrin being able to work with him, talk to him and motivate him is going to be a great thing for him. "One of the things Laurent kept saying when we spoke to him is that people haven't seen the best of him yet, so hopefully that spells an exciting time for Portsmouth fans." Although the fee is undisclosed, it is sure to represent a massive loss on the £10.5million Newcastle paid to Paris St Germain for the player in August 2001. Robert's agent Willie McKay confirmed on Wednesday morning the player was returning from a break on his native Reunion Island to speak to the south coast club. Robert told French football magazine But!: "I had a phone call with (Portsmouth manager) Alain Perrin. As all the French coaches in England, he has come to build something great. "He wants to work on the long term and that is why he has approached me. "I was attracted by Portsmouth. Since Perrin joined the club late last season, the players have had fun." Bolton had also spoken to Robert's representatives as well, but Sam Allardyce conceded they were some way off an agreement with the player. Toulouse were also understood to be interested in taking the player back to France but he has now decided his future lies at Fratton Park. Robert's erratic form was frustrating for Newcastle fans and managers alike - he had run-ins with Sir Bobby Robson and more recently his successor Souness. Robert claimed the club had gone backwards under the Scot, just prior to the Magpies' UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg against Sporting Lisbon, a match they lost. Storrie also promised Pompey fans there were more signings to follow. He told Sky Sports News: "We're looking to bring about five or six in. I've got another couple of deals on the go as well. "My wife is trying to get me to go away on holiday by the end of next week and I'd like a couple more deals done by then!" |
