I've touched on corruption in football before and now Mr. Southgate has been given a year to get his UEFA Pro Licence....

Now he has not even completed his UEFA B, plans to start his A Licence etc etc in January. How is it possible to get your A Licence and Pro Licence in 11 months? I would have thought he has very little spare time, as managing at the highest level is time consuming both on and off the pitch. They may as well just give him the lot for nothing, while the rest of us sweat, toil and find the time around our day to day jobs to get our qualifications.

However, I would rather earn my badges.

It does get to me that they are loooking for a way where pro managers can do their badges in double quick time. Shows very little respect for award if you ask me, and i would not be surprised if the likes of Southgate comes a cropper as for me he is not fully prepared for his job. I have nothing against Southgate as he has to do what he has to do to continue being a premiership manager.

I think Jose Mourinho said it best...
"Most pro players come straight out of playing and think they can become a top manager and rush through there badges. They do not take enough time to learn things well enough to be prepared"

What do you all think?

Is there not a major difference between management and coaching?

well basically the manager has to be a UEFA PRO standard coach to work as a manager in the premiership! Whether your job title is Manager or Head Coach you still need to be qualified!

This again is an example of who u know and not what u know. As has been said most people that aspire to be like the gr8s of the game will see this and think what the point is. One other thing I have noticed and I could be alone on this but top player hardly ever make top managers. If we take the current two top prem managers in the form of Sir Alex and Jose neither of them can be considered gr8 players by any stretch of the imagination and look they are top.

Whereas you have the likes of Bryan Robson gr8 gr8 player and he flops. But I think Roy keane may prove me wrong.

Any I do think that he (Southgate) is getting special treatment and it needs to be stopped. He said he was representing England of the last 10 years I’m sure he was not in all the squads he had the time and obviously the money to do it, but he didn’t. So why should he get anything. This all stemmed from letting roder take over at Newcastle ok he had different circumstances but the end result is the same, not qualified as pro.

Though I am not old enough to remember him playing, I have been told that, before he broke his leg, Brian Clough was a GREAT player. And there is no doubt that he was a GREAT manager.

Likewise! I am extremly jealous of those fortunate to have watched or better met 'Cloughie'. The man must of been a cracking player as 251 goals in 173 games says. The man is a legend and I have read all I can about him, i would suggest others do the same.
About Southgate I feel you can't blame him because a job like boro is massive. I do think though that he won't be in the job long. Although the system is all wrong the person who will suffer most in the long term is Southgate. He should take note of P.Ince at Macclessfield and P.jewell. P/J said that he learnt more in one days managing at Bradford than anywhere else and that he's still learning, also that southgate will have to learn extremly fast to have a chance.
To be honest i don't feel that the license should be needed to manage in the premiership, however, I feel that there should be a rule for players coming out of retirement that they can't manage (in PL) unless they have a years experience in the lower leagues or something relevant??? The courses should be optional but encouraged. The reason Clough and Fergie and Jose did so well is not because they were good or bad players, but because they learnt from the bottom. Clough-Hartlepool, Fergie-East Stirling, St.Mirren Jose- managed in low porteguese league after Barca. Us who don't play pro will learn a hell of a lot from badges and need them to go where we want to go. S/gate will probably not learn much from pro-licence like some of us- but would from managing Weymouth.
Hope I've actually made a point here?? Confused Confused

As great as Cloughie may have been, it is often overlooked that the vast majority of his goals were in Division 2. Fantastic record at that level though

That is true but he did play for England and back then it was much closer in quality than these days. Many teams from the lower divisions would win F.A cups. But valid point.

I'm fortunate that I once managed to meet and speak to the great man when I was just 15 in one of his sons local shops in Nottingham!

He commented on my mate's height (6'5) and asked me if I ever got a bad neck talking to him! I nervously spluttered out some incoherent answer!

Legend!
