Ljungberg vows Umeå return
Tuesday 27 May 2008
by Paul Saffer from Frankfurt

Football has been frustrating enough for Hanna Ljungberg in recent years without having to sit in the stands while Umeå IK fell to UEFA Women's Cup final defeat by 1. FFC Frankfurt at the weekend.

Ruled out
The Sweden striker has had a string of injury and illness problems over past seasons and has previously missed both of Umeå's finals against Frankfurt in 2002 and 2004, though did take part in the 2003 defeat of Fortuna Hjørring and last year's loss to Arsenal LFC following yet another long absence. Having scored in the quarter-final 10-0 aggregate win against FCL Rapide Wezemaal last autumn, Ljungberg was hopeful of taking a leading role in the later stages but ended up missing both the last-four success against Olympique Lyonnais and Saturday's final in Germany.

'Bad luck'
"I tore a hamstring five weeks ago," Ljungberg told uefa.com. "If the game had been a week later I may have played. I still want to play these types of games. This winter was so good - I was training all winter injury free, then I got the flu for the semi-finals. That's bad luck, and now this. Hopefully this is the last one, and of course it is hard mentally but I want to play. I love these kind of games and that's the feeling I want to get back to. But you can't keep doing this forever."

Disappointment
Ljungberg, 29, was instead one of more than 27,000 spectators as Umeå lost 3-2 in Frankfurt to go down 4-3 on aggregate. "I think it was a good game and everything around it was really nice but of course we are disappointed because we were so close," she said. "We should have won the game in Umea, that would have been the big difference. Both teams played well, had a lot of chances but they took them – we didn't."

Olympic hope
Sweden's summer season means that Ljungberg is now able to have some regular football, and is hopeful of getting back in the national team set-up in time for August's Olympics, having just missed out on bronze behind Germany four years ago. "If I return for my club, we have so many good players and I train with them every day, so I don't think [getting picked for the national squad] will be a problem," Ljungberg said. "But I need to get back, play some games and practice football for more than a few weeks at a time."
