England captain Faye White says her young team will learn from their Euro 2005 misery and emerge stronger.
Defeats by Denmark and Sweden meant England finished bottom of their group. But the skipper says youngsters like Alex Scott, Karen Carney and Eniola Aluko have provided encouragement ahead of qualifying for the 2007 World Cup. "We had the youngest squad at the competition and the likes of Eni and Alex only broke into the team in February," said the Arsenal defender. "So to see them go on and play against some of the best players in the world, expecting them to do well, and them performing is really encouraging." Defensive slip-ups late in the game against the Danes and early on against Sweden cost England dearly. They had looked on course for the semi-finals after the opening victory over Finland. But White believes there is still plenty to be positive about for supporters of the national team. She added: "A lot of hard work was put in only for us to end up bottom. It was a massive disappointment as we had it practically within our grasp. "I think it all comes down to a lack of experience really and knowing how to close out a game. "But the fact that we came so close is great for the team and the players because not so long ago we were only going to make up the numbers. "People who don't know a lot about the game might look at our final position and think that is rubbish, but that is simply not the case." |
