The president of the German Football League (DFL), Werner Hackmann, has died at the age of 59.
Hackmann had fought a long battle against lung cancer, but his death has nevertheless come as a surprise to those closest to him.
"I cannot believe it, I am absolutely shocked," said the DFL's vice-president Wolfgang Holzhauser.
"I spent a few days with him this week and there were no signs of his health deteriorating."
Hackmann died at his Hamburg home on Sunday morning (local time) and leaves behind his wife, Ulla, and two children.
As recently as Friday, Hackmann was continuing his duties as normal and was present at the UEFA congress in Dusseldorf at which Michel Platini was named the new UEFA president.
Hackmann was elected head of the DFL in 2000 and played a leading role in Germany's preparations for the 2006 World Cup.
He had previously served on the Hamburg board and was an active member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). |
