Cork City have confirmed that they will appeal against Fifa’s decision to uphold the transfer regulations which deem that former Ireland internationals Colin Healy and Gareth Farrelly cannot play for the club before July 1st.

Under Fifa rules, a player cannot be registered to more than two clubs within a 12-month period from the beginning of July – Healy played for Barnsley and Bradford City since last July, while Farrelly appeared for Blackpool and Cork’s eircom League rivals Bohemians.

A precedent which seemed to debunk the regulation was set in February, when Premiership giants Liverpool were granted permission to field Argentina World Cup star Javier Mascherano, who had already been on the books of West Ham United and Brazilian side Corinthians during the stipulated period.

And Cork are ready to fight the decision in a bid to lift the ban on Healy and Farrelly. A statement released by the club on Wednesday read: “The club is committed to doing everything in its power to see justice prevail in relation to the two players concerned.

“The club has spoken to, and taken, advice from people within the football world and the legal world, and also from the political scene.

“Cork City Football Club reiterates the unfairness of the situation, both for the players themselves, as well as for the club, and sincerely hope that justice and common sense will prevail in the matter.”
