St Patrick’s Athletic manager John McDonnell is reportedly weighing up an offer for former Sunderland midfielder Sean Thornton, who is onn the look-out for a new club this summer.

Thornton made 11 appearances as Sunderland suffered relegation from the Premiership in the 2002/03 season, scoring a fine goal against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

He subsequently helped the Black Cats to promotion in 2005 but was sold to Doncaster Rovers by then manager Mick McCarthy.

Player of the Year in his first season at Belle Vue, he failed to rediscover that form in the season just ended and was released by the Yorkshire club earlier this month.

And McDonnell, manager of the eircom League leaders, is reported to be interested in bringing the 24-year-old Drogheda lad to Richmond Park.

The Irish Daily Mirror reports on Friday morning that Thornton and former Coventry City and Republic of Ireland youth star Barry Quinn – now at Conference side Oxford United – are among the Saints’ transfer targets when the eircom League window opens on July 1st.
