Happiest memories of the Grand Old Lady |
|
It's weird to think Goodison Park could soon be consigned to history and deeply upsetting, but memories will never die. One of my favourite games was when I was 10 and we were on the way to Wemley for the 95 Cup Final. We were playing Norwich in the 5th round and my Dad (a strange man) had a massive bag of apples with him and was offering them round to everyone. Where he'd got the apples from I still have no idea. It was just great though because I am one of them people who gets too nervous in close games and I much prefer it when the Blues totally wallop who they are playing and save my heart rate and we so did on that day. By God we did. We gave them a 5-0 hiding and I remember it so well. It was one of many brilliant memories.
As a man who loves to see Everton deal out a damn good thrashing, the 7-1s against Southampton and West Ham and 6-2 against Swindon were also great days. The day we actually beat United 1-0 was only good afterwards, when my heart had slowed down a bit. First game was against Crystal Palace when I was very, very young. Don't even remember the score but know Sheedy scored a goal. I think I was more absorbed in my Mask annual to be honest. God, I will miss all the little quirks about Goodison. Where else do you go to church for a cup of tea before a game? |

So many great memories .......
1) For atmosphere , I guess the Bayern Munich game in '85 was pretty special ....... took me 1 hour 53 minutes to get into the ground , the queues were that long . I remember the guy next to me accidently punching me in the mouth as Sir Trev scored the 3rd . 2) For sheer satisfaction , clinching the title with a 2-0 win over QPR in '85 was special. The first time I'd been there as Everton became Champions . 3) Beating Man Utd 5-0 in '84 ...... sweet 4) Taking my son to Goodison for the 1st time , a Youth Cup game in '02 . 5) Ray Atteveld and Nev chucking their kit into the Gwladys St. in 1990 . 6) Andy King ending 7 years of misery in '78 . |

Gerrard is God, you are right, that one was an absolute classic. I have it on VHS at home and I sometimes watch it back to myself. Got to be the best FA Cup tie ever. Still prefer to see us giving another team a good thumping though, as I'm sure you do with Liverpool at Anfield. There was another game under Walter Smith where we drew 4-4 with Leeds. I remember being late into the ground and we were already 2-1 up after about 10 minutes. That was a great game.

It isn't a favourite of mine ......... prefer the 2nd replay when we won 1-0 . Best thing about the 4-4 game is that that little **** Dalglish resigned after the game . According to legend , in the dressing room after Dalglish started to blame Beardsley ( who had scored twice ) for the fact that the RS had only drawn despite being ahead 4 times . Beardsley alledgedly threw his boots at him and told him to blame the defence , so he foolishly had a go at Grobelaar , who then attacked him and had to be restrained by the other players . Next day Dalglish told the Board he'd lost the "dressing room" and resigned . |

Other great personal memories ......
1) Beating the RS 2-1 in 1981 ......Steve McMahon ( in his pre-treachery days ) standing on the perimeter fence at the Gwladys St end , celebrating with the fans . 2) Latchford's 30th goal against Chelsea . 3) Going to watch the RS play the Mancs in the FA Cup in 1985 , but having my ear to the radio commentary of our game from Villa Park . Celebrating the news of Sheedy's goal and then realising I was about to have difficulties explaining myself to the Mancs all around me 4) Screaming at Psycho Pat the number of the Telford player who had fouled and hurt Brace . Without turning round , Pat held up his hand in acknowledgement , and a couple of minutes later , retribution was delivered 5) Walking from the vault to the Directors Box carrying the Championship trophy in 1987 ..... |

Wow, did you actually get to hold the trophy?

Van den Hauwe was class, I really liked him for you boys and was delighted when he joined Tottenham towards the end of the '80's. There was no messing with him! |

Yes..... the proper old 1st Division trophy , which I believe is now awarded to the winners of the Coca Cola Championship . It was in 1987 , and I was living in Devon and only coming up for about half the games . I was invited to watch the game against Chelsea from the Directors' Box and asked the then Secretary , Jim Greenwood , if I could have my photo taken with it next time I was up . That turned out to be against West Ham , the following month . I turned up in the morning , as arranged , just as they were getting out of the vault for ITV to do a piece on it . They wanted to use it in the Directors Box for their opening credits , and Jim turned , handed it to me , and said that I might as well carry it I took it up to the Box , my girlfriend took several photos of me with it and then I handed it to the ITV people . I was then allowed to wander round Goodison unattended , which I did for about an hour . Then to the pub and back to the ground at 2pm for kick off . |

my one too as for the best fa cup match, in my eyes i think so up there with tranmere getting past the saints 4-3 after being 3-0 down at halftime |

Lol yeah, oleole, none of us could quite believe it had happened when Tranmere came from 3 down. I remember Aldo's reaction. He went ballistic and I think the Southampton bench even complained about his reaction for some reason. Still think Everton 4:4 Liverpool edges it just purely because of who were playing. In 1991, the two Liverpool clubs were just about the biggest in the country. Lol, remember Hinchy's goal line clearance. It was just spectacular. I cannot remember the actual game, I don't think I would have been there, but I have the VHS and sometimes I jst watch it when I am bored, it always livens me up.
Was it Hoddle in caharge of Southampton, I think it was. I might be wrong then. I think it was against Bolton in the League Cup semi when Aldo got complaints against him from Sam Allardyce. It would have been so good for Tranmere to have won the League Cup that year. Imgine all three Merseyside Clubs having won major honours. It would have been brilliant. In one of my worst memories of Goodison, I remember sitting with my head in my hands as Tranmere totally annihilated us in the FA Cup 4th round. I think it was the same season, 2001. I kind of a had a feeling we would get beat before the game started, but to get absolutely battered was just sheer pain. 3-0 it ended up. Lol, probably the most humiliating day ever to be an Evertonian. My brother in law is a big Tranmere fan and he has a ig framed print of all the goals on his wall. He'll never let me forget that day. Incidentally, Everton used to play a friendly every pre-season against Tranmere without fail at Prenton. What happened to that tradition, it used to be a cracking little warm up and always a good atmosphere. |

Oh God..... I was in the Gwladys St for that Tranmere game ....... bloody nightmare .

Lol, I can remember it alright. It was horrible. 'Shed' you may call it but it is too good for you shower. I was, as always in Lower Bullens and there was plenty of you lot in there with us. That's why I hate losing Merseyside derbies. All the bloody away fans are in amongst you waiting to rub your noses in it. Still, it makes winning them nicer too I suppose.

great game for Evertonians the match against wimbledon. holdworth should have put in 4 goals if it weren't for his off shooting then barry horne's stunner followed by stuart a match that will go down in history at goodison which went against Everton was norwich and efan ekoku becoming the first to bag 4 in a match. Everton dominated the whole match yet amazingly lost to good counter attacks and finishing |

Lol, it was a good game but I never want that or the Coventry City scenario 4 years later to ever happen again or it might just finish me off. As for the Efan Ekoku incident, he was always a bogeyman for Everton. It was weird, him, Fowler, Ferdinand and Sturridge bizarrely always scored against Everton. They were pests. That is what made battering Norwich 5:0 in the Cup all the sweeter, although I think Ekoku had left Norwich by then as it was one season on. Les Ferdinand was a something else. If his record against us is much less than a goal a game I would be surprised. In 1995 when he joined Newcastle there was a rumour he may have been coming to us. I would have loved that. He was a terrific player.
Just on a totally separate issue, I think he could have won us Euro 96 had he been brought on earlier against Germany in the semi. |

Ah yes a typical RS goal ....... a free kick that shouldn't have been given , taken from the wrong place , you lot just can't help yourself when it comes to cheating . And proof that you don't attend the games Crabhead ...... the away fans at Goodison haven't had an end since 1994 . The last 13 years , they've gone in the last section of the Bullens Rd stand , that is down the side of the pitch . |
