Spurs signs young Prince

From correspondents in London
August 01, 2007

Tottenham Hotspur has signed Germany Under-21 midfield player Kevin-Prince Boateng from German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

Boateng, 20, becomes Spurs manager Martin Jol's sixth signing of a busy close-season at White Hart Lane. The club has not revealed the fee or length of contract, but Hertha is believed to have received around £5 million ($11.9 million).

Jol had already signed Darren Bent, Gareth Bale, Younes Kaboul, Adel Taarabt and Danny Rose as he tries to fashion Spurs into a team capable of finishing in the top four of the English Premier League.

The Dutchman believes Boateng is another valuable addition.

"Kevin is a talented player who plays for the under-21 side of his country," Jol said.

"You could compare him with the likes of Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone in that he is an exciting player for now and the future.

"He is an attacking midfield player, very strong, and that is one of his main assets.

"In Germany, he is regarded as one of the biggest talents.

"We recognised this and went in for him."

Boateng admitted that Tottenham's attractive and attacking style football helped to persuade him to move to north London.

"For me it is amazing to be in England," Boateng said.

"To be in London and playing for Spurs will be great for me. It has been my ambition to play in England, I am 20 now and am about to quickly realise my dream.

"I know that Spurs are a team who like to play offensive football. The club want to climb higher next season and I want to be a part of it.

"I watched the premier league regularly in Germany. It is the most famous league in the world and I have always enjoyed it."

Hi All

Went up to Derby last night to watch the reserves and just wanted to say that Boateng looks a real "CLASS ACT", i know it was only the reserves but he was everywhere in midfield and his goal was quality, he should have had a second that hit the woodwork. Really looking forward to seeing more of him down the Lane!!

Cheers

I really wanna see him play now. Sounds like a real hot prospect for us. After all, we did pay £5.4 million, so he must be something at his age.

Hi there Row13, always good to see another fan join the ranks. Been a bit absent myself in recent months due to a house move but things are slowly getting back to normal now. Smile

KPB looks like an amazing prospect - it's really fantastic to see so much young talent at Spurs nowadays. It suggests that our improvement over the last couple of seasons should be a bit more than a flash in the pan. We can be really positive and confident that the team and the club in general will continue to improve over the next 5 years or so.

Exciting times for us Lilywhites!
