Favourite all-time Evertonians |

So guys , who are your favourite Everton players of all-time and why ?
Personally my favourite players , at any given time have tended not to be the no.9 that everyone else worships . Maybe because I'm perverse or just admire different qualities but I never fell in love with Royle ,Latchford , Lineker or Cottee like some did . Here's my list in chronological order : 1) Colin Harvey - when I first started going to the match , my young mind was impressed by the talk of the "White Pele " and the legend of his debut at the San Siro . Plus even as an 8 year old , I could see he was a damn good player . 2) Andy King - his skill and flamboyance , allied to Latchford's goals were a shining beacon in an otherwise depressing period . When I got to meet him in adult life , I was delighted to find him charming and funny company . My one regret is that we never got that game of golf in , but that's another story . 3) Neville Southall - a legend , truly world class , at his peak without doubt the best keeper I've ever seen . My most prized possession is a shirt he wore in training which he signed on the collar and chest . My wife has done some work for the club , on and off , for the last 13 years or so , and she got it for me Christmas '94 . 4) Pat van den Hauwe - I was not too pleased when we bought him , I didn't want the '84 Cup Final team broken up , but Psycho soon won me over . That tackle on Remi Moses ; that fight at QPR ; throwing the ball at Paul Mariner ; the assist against Ipswich in the Cup QF in '85 ; beating up McMahon in a Southport nightclub in '86 ; inviting me round to his house . A lovely lad when sober but give him a drink ....... 5) Mikel Arteta - since Nev retired , I've struggled to find a new hero , but Mikel's performances the last couple of years have given me a new hero to worship . So there you have it . Don't get me wrong . There are many more players I've loved , George Wood ; most of the '85 sqaud ; David Unsworth ; Dave Watson ; Joe Parkinson ; Big Dunc etc. but the 5 mentioned above stand out in my affections , and were my favourite players at the time . So , please feel free to criticize my choices and to give us the benefit of your own personal favourites . |

As you know, nickcat0, i am a bit younger than you so I don't remember a couple of players on your list but here are my top ever blues.
1) Tony Cottee. He was the first ever player I got the name of on the back of my shirt. When I was a kid, he seemed to score every bloomin' week. I loved one particular day driving in the car when Everton were down at White Hart Lane and Cottee bagged a hat trick. That was immense, and I think the game finished 3-3. 2)Daniel Amokachi. He was just cool, and also seemed like such a likeable fellow. I was really sad to see him go and those two goals again against Spurs in the '95 FA Cup semi final were just brilliant. That was the most one sided semi final I have ever seen. 3)Neville Southall. The one player I think everyone would unanimously agree in my list was absolutely world class. At his peak, there was no goalkeeper better than Neville Southall and as a goalkeeper when I was at Under 10 and Under 11 level, he was my hero. 4)Gary Ablett. Because I got my photo took with him after we won the FA Cup. 5)Duncan Ferguson. Because he was just about the best thing about Everton all the way through the years he was at the club. A brilliant player and a passionate servant of Everton FC. 6)Joe Parkinson. I just remember watching him in midfield and the man never lost a tackle once. He would always go in and he would win the ball perfectly cleanly every single time. For such a combative midfielder, he was one of the cleanest players I ever saw, which is a measure of how exceptional a tackler he was. He should undoubtedly have played for England but you know my feelings on this. 7)Anders Limpar. He could be frustrating, but for a brief while he showed real consistency under Joe Royle and he was a player who could make things happen and really open teams up. 8)Joe Yobo. Because he ROCKS!!! Seriously, I know no one would agree but I would say he is one of the best centre halves around just now. His improvement under Moyes is a credit both to himself and the club.I feel proud to watch a defender of true class playing for Everton. Incidentally, my Dad (who has a very long memory) picks Jimmy Gabriel as his top all time Everton player. |

Some interesting choices there Gauis . Ask your dad if he remembers Jimmy Gabriel playing keep ball by the corner flag in the '66 Cup Final , then turning to acknowledge the crowd . Sorry never a fan of TC. I always felt he scored too many of his goals when we were already 2 or 3 up , but he'd never score when it was 0-0 and you really needed it ; except for the 4-4 game of course I loved Amo . Sometimes his first touch would let him down , but his enthusaism was infectious . Big Nev ........ he's on my list also . A legend and a true hero . Not only a great goalie but a great character . Never really warmed to Gary Ablett . My hatred of Liverpool takes a lot of getting over . Big Dunc is possibly my wife's all-time favourite , along with Latchford . I loved his committment and loyalty . And of course there are so many great stories about him , but that's a thread in itself Joe Parkinson was a favourite . I actually saw him at the cinema in Southport a couple of months ago . I think it was at Pirates of the Caribbean ; he was there with his son and was sitting about 2 rows behind us . Fortunately I resisted the temptation to say anything to him , just let him enjoy the time with his lad , and not make a fool of myself . Anders was a very skilful player and I was delighted when we got him . Did you know that he used to shave all his body hair off Joseph Yobo is a quality player . You won't get any argument from me over your claims of him being one of the best around . Thanks for the reply , I find it interesting as to why people have different favourites . |
