Thanks. Looks like an even more crucial game for the Swedes, and prob no Ljungberg again.

In Wednesday's late training session, the oft-injured Hanna Ljungberg aggravated an earlier thigh injury she suffered against North Korea during the World Cup. Sweden has brought Madelaine Edlund to Viborg, Denmark in case Ljungberg is unable to play in today's game and according to this article, Ljungberg's status will not be decided until shortly before kickoff. If she is unable to play Therese Lundin will likely start beside Lotta Schelin up top for the Swedes. (Swedish)

Sportbladet says Ljungberg will not be in the starting 11 and that the Swedes are expected to play a 4-4-2 with their midfield in a diamond with Victoria Svensson playing attacking mid. (Swedish)

Schelin, who often played on the flank at the World Cup, is expected to have a more central role for the Swedes today. (Swedish)

There is much for the Swedes to play for today when they take on Denmark in the first leg of a 2008 Olympic qualifying playoff (video). If the Swedes were to lose the playoff, 22 players will also lose financial support from the Swedish Olympic Committee. In addition to losing financial support, Göteborgs-Posten says failing to qualify for the Olympics could mean that head coach Thomas Dennerby will begin a roster turnover. (Swedish)

Thanks for the link...enjoyed a good match between two good teams. A real bonus to have been able to see the game. Sweden have surely done enough to guarantee their place in China and good luck to them.

England definitely got screwed on this one, but if it had to be anyone I'm glad it's Sweden. It'll be the last hurrah for several of there stars from 2003. Svensson's still on the fence about retiring, but I highly doubt that'll happen. If Ljunberg's healthy for once in her career, they keep playing Schelin forward, they could actual put together a really good run at the Olympics, which will be fun.

They apparently got a boost in there Olympic funding, which should at least relieve the stresses that the English Women's team constantly have to deal with. They beat Germany, the USWNT beats Brazil and then USWNT beat Sweden in the finals, what a perfect Olympics, for me.

By the way, saw the lowlights of the England v. Croatia game. Did anyone else think Hope Solo could have saved that first one? Wink

Laughing well said.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves with the USA beating Sweden in the final of the Olympics , they haven't qualified yet and I don't want to tempt fate , especially if Briana ' I'm too slow ' Scurry gets a stint in goal. It certainly wouldn't of been the same without Sweden in Beijing , they have more of a chance of going further than Denmark would have , and that's no disrespect to the Danes.

True, true, true, I've gotten way ahead of myself. But the possibility that the US and Sweden could actually play up to their potentials has gotten me overly excited, wouldn't that be fun to watch. Very Happy

I apologize to all including the soccer/football gods. Embarassed
