Sweden v Denmark in Olympic play-off

Denmark will be at home in the first leg of the play-off with Sweden
to decide Europe's third representatives
at the 2008 Olympic women's football tournament.

Germany and Norway booked returns to China
with their runs at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup,
which concludes on Sunday, but third-best European performers England
are ineligible for the Olympic tournament as the United Kingdom.

Consequently Sweden and Denmark, who were eliminated in the group stage,
will meet home and away to claim the vacant position.
The order of matches has been decided by today's draw
with the dates to be determined in the next couple of weeks.

Cool. That's good. In the men's game it should be taken seriously. At the Olympics you never see the top players representing their country.

That is a slight exaggeration, due to fewer teams in the tournament (8,10 and now 12 instead of 16 as in the WWC) and that the spots are divided between the Confederations even less due to skill than in the WWC (and more due to politic and to have a more even spread over the World) the Olympic is clearly behind the WWC in status although also very clearly the no2 tournament well ahead of even the Women European Championship.

Exactly what I said then.

And I meant more how important it is for the players,
not how many teams participate etc.

Pires & Ronaldo back in 96 , Rivaldo in 2000 he was blamed for losing a ball and that ended in bazil elimination of the tournament

Oh, well if Rivaldo played in 2000 (around the time he was the best in the world) then i guess what i said was wrong.

Yes, no England at the Olympics. They had to qualify as Great Britain, per some Olympic rules.

The Swedish players are disappointed that their 2008 Olympic qualifying playoff match against Denmark on Thursday in Viborg, Denmark will not be shown on TV in Sweden. (Swedish)

Not that I could have watched it any way but, bummer...
