Kevin McHugh rescued Derry City's season with a stunning extra-time winner in Tuesday's Eircom League Cup final against Bohemians. McHugh hammered in a glorious curling shot from 25 yards to earn Derry's third successive League Cup triumph.

Derry edged possession in the first half but there was major controversy as Bohs Glen Crowe's apparently perfectly good goal was disallowed.

Both teams went close in the second half but the game went to extra-time.

Derry had a chance in the opening seconds at the Brandywell with Ciaran Martyn's through ball playing in Mark Farren but Owen Heary got in a last-ditch challenge to avert the danger.

As Derry continued their lively start, Martyn's attempted cross was almost deflected past Bohs keeper Brian Murphy in the fourth minute while Farren then drove directly at the goalkeeper with an angled shot on eight minutes.

Derry had another chance on 15 minutes but McHugh's header across goal just evaded Farren.

However, the Candystripes had a huge escape on 26 minutes when Bohs striker Crowe had an effort controversially ruled out after he had outjumped Pat Jennings to head the ball into the net.

It looked an extremely harsh call against the former Republic of Ireland striker.

Derry regrouped to create another chance before the interval but Martyn blasted over after he had been played in by Killian Brennan's quick free-kick.

Former Linfield and Lisburn Distillery player Ryan McCann blasted wide for Bohs on 51 minutes and Crowe wasted another half-chance for the Dubliners on 61 when he failed to control Des Byrne's clever pass.

Ciaran Martyn and Owen Heary missed headed opportunities at either end in the final 20 minutes of normal time while Crowe's snapshot was tipped over by Jennings.

Pat McCourt, who had been lively all night, dribbled his way through the Bohs defence in the 75th minute but he took one touch too many and the ball was cleared.

With no goals in normal-time, it looked as though it was going to take something special to win the game and so it proved with McHugh delivering his unstoppable shot in the eighth minute of extra-time.

Congrats Derry.

Does anyone have a video of the goal? I tried Youtube but there was nothing there...

Naw watched it on Setanta (I'm from Derry but refuse to jump on the bandwagon and support them) and it was a cracking goal. Don't see many goals of that standard in the Eircom League

How come you don't support them, mate? Do you attend any of their home games as a neutral?

I assume it's most likely because of the standard as you made reference too. Conald gave me a link earlier in the year and I used to watch a few Cork games but they were too early in the morning (I only wake up for the Toon you see Wink )

Just never followed them and they began to do well in Europe (thumping Gretna then going out 2-0 against PSG) and suddenly thousands of bandwagonee's crawled out claiming 'I've always folled Derry' etc. Just annoys the life out me. Fans like that put me off the club.

Plus my best mates da used to manage them and the fans still give him dogs abuse, even though he's their. most successful manager ever. He used to manage Conalinho's team too but he left and they became sh*t again Laughing

Who are ya on about? Felix Healy by any chance?

Congratulations to Derry for winning the cup again, nice to see McQ the former Harps legend getting the goal too, I saw it earlier on the sports news..quality goal it was.

There was a fight before the game though, just been on the news that about 5 people have been jailed for 3 months over it

Aye they wrecked a 'Protestant' Bar just up the street from me. Owners had the choice of letting the culprits pay to fix the damage or send them to jail. Dirty cnut choose the latter

There is the goal.

CFCBhoy - I take it your a Glasgow Celtic fan, rather than a confused Chelsea fan?

There is nothing wrong with supporting your home team, bandwagon or not. I got on the bandwagon in 1985 and haven't fallen off yet.

If it's the standard of football that bothers you then you are a snob. But if the likes of Neil Lennon and Aiden McGeady rock your boat then fair play to you, snobbery doesn't come into it, either does football.

I was a Celtic fan up to 85 and was only supporting them like the rest of football supporters from Ireland because of their success. Football will never improve in this country if boys like you put British teams before their own home teams.

And if your taliking about Felix , i'll tell him you were asking for them when I see at the game tonight at least he goes and supports his local team.

Who does he support? Hes a Man United fan ya nut. Hates Derry City. The only reason he goes to the Brandywell is because he works for Setanta and its his job. I don't support Celtic due to snobbery or any of the tripe you mentioned. My da is from Donegal and supported Celtic & Finn Harps all his lfe. Was raised the same even though I was from Derry so I preferred not to follow Irish football at all.

Secondly Neil Lennon dosn't play for Celtic and No footballer 'rocks my boat'...not my scene.

You say there's nothing wrong with jumping on the bandwagon...I know hundreds of Derry City fans and not one of them was happy when so called 'loyal supporters' began sufacing again once they were doing well in Europe and the league.

You mentioned supporting Celtic 'due to their success'. Why? Why not support Rangers? Real Madrid? Liverpool? Success has nothing to do with it. Celtic were far from successful when I was growing up. Rangers dominated the Scottish league and thats when alot 'fans' began supporting United, Arsenal, etc. Success isn't a part of it.

I never mentioned that there is anything wrong with supporting your home team. Some do, some don't. I don't, and that will never change no matter how big the football in Ireland grows

Felix never misses a match and the only thing that stopped him from going recently was the Harps job. I'll ask him tonight if he hates Derry. As all things Derry, I'll have nothing bad said about our team or even him Wink

I know Lennon plays for Forest now, the point was that he's a poor excuse for a footballer and you have followed the likes of him in the past the way I follow the muck that is often served up at the Brandywell. Therefore, you shouldn't have an issue with the standard of football.

I'm admitting it often can be rubbish, but it's our home team. No one should look down on anybody from actually going and supporting the team, may it be bandwagon or not. The more at the matches the better, these people pay good money to go and support the team. I'll have more time for a part time fan who goes to support the team through the good times rather than someone from the town who supports a foreign team from afar. You obviously didn't grow up in the city when there was no football team for years. There is nothing worse, I fully appreciate now the fact that there is a football team representing the city. It's something I couldn't take for granted.

As for your assertion that hundreds of Derry fans were annoyed that people jumped on the bandwagon, i don't think so. I'm in a supporters club and we are of the general agreement that the future of the team is centred around gaining any support we can get.

I'm hopeful that you think football in Ireland could grow, it's a pity you couldn't be swayed to get behind a team from your own city.

Hold on hold on. I didn't say I don't follow Derry due to standard of football in Ireland. The onily time I mentioned standards was when I said you don't see many goals of McHughs' standard in the league.

Don't get my wrong, I want to see Derry do well and win things and hope the league grows to bigger and better things but that will still not make me run out and buy strips and tracksuits and start showing my face at games.

To sum up, standard of football isn't an issue with me. I'll watch anything from D&D to Champions League. I want to see Irish teams to well in Europe and progress and gain some recognition. I wouldn't begrudge the money to go and watch Derry but I wouldn't say I would become a fan.

You seem a genuine enough lad, just a pity we couldn't get you and a few more football fans like you to a few games!
At the start of the next season, when you see an advert or a written article about the new season, remember that you are welcome to come along. Take it as an invite!

What is it with games being played Friday nights?
Do a lot of fans fly over for Premiership games on a saturday or something like that?
