David Moyes is making it his mission to put Everton back on the European map.

The Blues tasted European glory in 1985 when they won the Cup Winners' Cup, but were denied the chance to make regular inroads in continental competition by the ban on English clubs enforced following the Heysel disaster.

Moyes believes that unfortunate period had a detrimental effect on Everton's European status.

He told Evertonfc.com: "I would love to tell people in Europe that Everton were champions and but for the Heysel disaster they may have had a long run in Europe. People forget that and don't understand what happened."

"Everton were unlucky," continued Moyes, "But not as unlucky as the people involved in the tragedy of course.

"I would have to say I am sure it [the ban] has had an effect, it effected the draw in the Champions League two years ago."

Currently presiding over a resurgent Everton side who have won their last three Uefa Cup games and top group A, Moyes is keen to spread his club's growing reputation.

"I would like to get Everton back on the European map and show people that there is a growing football club in England that are out there with the top four and doing well," he said.

"I think we have to continue to do well in the Premier League and keep building and make European football a regular occurence.

"We have only won a couple of group games, we have done nothing. But it is better than what it was."

Well said moyes....

Cue lots of RS coming on here calling us Bitter Blues .

But I don't care . I was one of 25,000 that went to Rotterdam and behaved ourselves . There were 7 arrests , in a single incident 2 days before the game . That was it .

They took 15,000 to Belgium , wrecked the place , and got us all banned .

He's not dragging it up... We and the poor people involved in the actual incident will never forget it and mainly they wont forget it. So our David is not dragging it up at all.

Moyes is merely explaining why we don't have a European tradition over the last 20 years.

We missed out in the mid 80's due to a ban that wasn't our fault .

Then after 15/4/89 , we were the first to go all seater . Within 2 years , we had installed seats in all areas , or else closed them down ( lower Park End ). This we did at our own expense . Other clubs , such as Liverpool , who disgracefully took a further 3 years to go all seater , waited to receive funding and grants , and therefore did not incur huge debts .

When the 90's football/Sky/Champions League boom took place ; these other clubs were in a far stronger financial position , and were able to steal a march on us .

It is only now , we are starting to recover from the missed European opportunity of the 80's and the financial burden of going all seater .

Still , at least we know that we always acted with the greatest integrity . Mnay other clubs , including Liverpool who tried to keep terracing , can't say the same .

Why do Liverpool get all the blame for the ban? The ban wasn't a result of Hysel, merely triggered by it - the ban was a result of many incidents involving English fans.

And besides which, the final should never have been played in the stadium in the first place.

It is rather insenstive that you'd use this tragedy as an excuse to have a dig at Liverpool.

Yes the ban was as a result of Heysel ..... no Heysel = no ban .

Don't try and blame the stadium ........ or are you admitting that you lot can't be trusted to behave , but need fences and walls to keep you in line .

Dig at Liverpool ? ....... merely stating facts .

No - Heysel triggered the ban as the final straw, but the ban was by no means a result of that one incident. It was a succession of incidents involving English clubs in Europe and we just happened to be the last one.

No, i'm saying that a stadium practically crumbling apart shouldn't have been used for the single biggest match on the club football stage. I'm not condoning our fans, but the fact remains that UEFA got it wrong in selecting that arena.

True, your are stating facts - whilst unearthing an old tragedy in the process and manipulating it to excuse your recent European history. "I would have to say I am sure it [the ban] has had an effect, it effected the draw in the Champions League two years ago".. the fact Moyes uses the disaster to blame Liverpool for Everton's failure a few season's ago is, as i said, not really acceptable.

If you lot hadn't caused the trouble at Heysel , there would have been no ban . None of the previous trouble had led to a ban , there is no proof that any further events would have led to a ban . And by the way , I don't recall any of the previous events you refer to , leading to 39 deaths .

If you lot hadn't charged at the Juve fans , the wall wouldn't have collapsed . Yes , it was a s** stadium , but if you lot had behaved yourselves , that wouldn't have made a diiference .

if we hadn't have been banned , for your crimes , that team of the mid 80's wouldn't have broken up , Kendall wouldn't have left , and we would have have won the European Cup for the last 20 odd years .

Its still not guaranteed though. You might have qualified but anything could happen and those players who transferred away might have transferred at a later date and it could have been even worse for Everton.
