Mellberg to Juve |
|
It's several days I'm hearing about this. Olof Mellberg free agent in June is going to join Juventus for the next season.
The Aston Villa stopper is out of contract next summer and, although coach Martin O’Neill is determined to keep him, it would appear that the Italian giants have managed to convince Mellberg that joining them would be the best possible career move for him at this time. No official agreement can be announced until February, but it is reported that the 30-year-old Swedish defender will has already given his blessings to a deal that will bind him to the Bianconeri for at least two years with an option for a third. The impending arrival of Mellberg, who joined Villa from Racing Santander in July 2001 for £5m, is not expected to come in the way of Juve’s planned purchase of Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic from Lokomotiv Moscow, seeing that the veteran Swede will be available on a free. All this spells bad news for Bianconeri bench-warmer Jean-Alain Boumsong, who now looks increasingly certain to be leaving Turin in the summer. Do you think Mellberg can fix some of the problems of Juventus back line? |

I read that Sven recommended Mellberg to Juve and MON wasn't one bit happy. He replied saying he's going to recommened City's players to Barca & Man U to see how he likes it.
Anyway, I rate Mellberg very highly. Very solid defender and there are few clubs in the world that he wouldn't start in, Juve not being one of them |

The Swedish stopper’s contract with the Villans ends at the end of the current campaign, meaning that from January onwards he will be able to negotiate with other clubs about a Bosman free transfer move.
The Italian press firmly believe that Mellberg will move to Juventus, and the 30-year-old is being coy about his future. "The situation is the same as before. The focus is on Aston Villa, then we will see,” he replied. "I understand that there are many rumours since I am out of contract at the end of the season." Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill however is hoping that his centre-back will stay at the club. "I don't know if there is anything in the Juventus link and Olof will tell me in his own time if that is the case. Players are free to make decisions here,” O’Neill said. "This is an important contract for Olof. He has been here seven years and, in terms of the commitment he has given since I've been here, I couldn't ask any more. “He might think that seven years is a long time at one club in this day and age. "But I will still think, if we can come up with something which is reasonably suitable, that he might stay at Villa. But if he chooses to go, all he has to do is just let me know.”
