Alan Mathews has parted company with Longford Town with immediate effect after meeting club officials this week.
Mathews is the most successful manager in Longford’s history, having led the club to back-to-back FAI Cup crowns in 2003 and 2004.
But his five-and-a-half-year stint in charge at Flancare Park comes to an end following relegation from the Premier Division last month.
The midlanders won enough points to save their top flight status but a six-point deduction for licensing irregularities proved costly in the final reckoning.
Despite their league struggles, Longford reached the final of the FAI Ford Cup where they lost out to Cork City last weekend, and that game at the RDS has proved to be Mathews’ swansong. |
Shame they went down because of a technicality instead of what went on on the pitch but on the other hand its the clubs own fault for not having things up to scratch.
