Shamrock Rovers manager Pat Scully has completed the signing of forward Dessie Baker from relegated Longford Town.

Baker played his last game for the midlanders in the FAI Ford Cup final defeat to Cork City six days ago.

The former Manchester United and Shelbourne man spent almost five years at Flancare Park but becomes the first big-name player to confirm his departure following relegation from the top flight last month.

Speaking of his latest acquisition, Scully said: “I played with Dessie and he’s an excellent signing for us. Other clubs were after him but he’s come to Rovers because he believes in what we’re trying to do here.

“It’s a great opportunity for him too at this stage of his career. He’s got a lot of experience under his belt and will make a huge contribution to Shamrock Rovers.”

I saw him play a few times last season and he seemed decent enough but Im not sure if he'd be good enough if Shams are hoping to push for Europe next season

Hes only 30?! Hard to believe, he seems to have been around forever, I thought he was around 35 or so.

He should be a good enough signing, he was quality back bout 5 or six years ago when he was at Shels
