WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. United traded defender Bobby Boswell to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday for goalkeeper Zach Wells and a conditional 2009 draft pick.

Boswell was the 2006 MLS defender of the year, but he struggled at times this season and was not an every-game starter by the end of the year. He played in only 59 minutes of United's two playoff games.

"Adding depth on the backline was an offseason priority, and we are pleased to have accomplished that with such an outstanding player," Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear said.

Wells was the backup for the Dynamo's back-to-back MLS championship seasons. He didn't play in 2006, and made four appearances, including three starts, this year.

Wells will become the starter for United in place of Troy Perkins. United has agreed to sell Perkins' rights to a Scandinavian club, with an announcement expected soon.

Apparently the rumor about Perkin's being sold is going to become truth.
