Stephen Kenny looks set to make a surprise return to Derry City as he is on the verge of becoming The Candystripes' new manager.

A week after John Robertson parted company with the Brandywell side, City are set to appoint Kenny on a three-year deal.

Kenny, who left Derry at the start of the year to take charge of Scottish team Dunfermline, parted company with Scottish First Division side last week after a poor start to the season.

And while discussions between City and Kenny are at an advanced stage, the Dubliner is believed to be seeking written assurances on a number of key issues before putting pen to paper on the three-year contract.

Derry chairman Pat McDaid said: 'I am delighted Stephen is returning.

'He was our was our only target for the job and I know the players, staff and supporters will welcome this early Christmas present.'

'We encountered few difficulties in the negotiations. We have had comprehensive meetings and are delighted with the outcome.'

In his first spell, Kenny guided Derry to the FAI Cup, two League Cups and into the second qualifying round of the Champions League rounds.

He should be a good appointment if his last spell is anything to go by, he did nothing in Scotland but hardly had much to work with. Should be a good contest in the North West next season!

I sense a few glamour friendlies on the agenda soon.

Off topic, but amazing how Derry pulled those big games they got a few years back. Barca with a full strength team, United with the likes of O'Shea, Silvestre & Fortune and Madrid

Yeah I remember the Barca game, they were thrashed 7-0 or something but it was great to have a team like that around here.

Something that does annoy me though about those games though is that all of a sudden you get a load of 'fans' of the club suddenly re-emerging. They couldnt care less about the club most weeks but once they play a high profile team theyre the first in line for tickets. Same thing happened with Harps when we played Celtic earlier this season, I didnt bother going but I heard it was the biggest attendance we got all season apart from the Derry game in the cup

Finally been confirmed...

Derry City have confirmed Stephen Kenny as their new manager.

The Dubliner has signed a three-year deal with the Brandywell club and was unveiled to the media and fans in the city this afternoon.

Kenny said that no decisions have been made on his backroom staff but he hopes to work on assembling his off-the-field personnel over the coming weeks.

Kenny said that he needs around four new players as the club only currently has 14 fit outfield players.

He said he will only sign players that he believes will add something to the squad.

Kenny previously managed the club after spells with Longford Town and Bohemians.

Kenny left Derry last December to take over at Dunfermline in Scotland but he was sacked earlier this month.

He will replace John Robertson, who had his contract terminated this month.
