Swiss Football Association representative Ernst Lammli claims Ottmar Hitzfeld will discuss his future with Bayern Munich before deciding whether to take over as Switzerland boss after Euro 2008.
Lammli met with Hitzfeld over the Christmas period as Switzerland continue their search for a successor for Kobi Kuhn, who has announced he will retire following the summer showpiece which the Swiss are co-hosting with Austria.
Lammli said: "Ottmar wants to speak to Bayern first in January and we obviously respect that.
"Then we will certainly hear something from him."
Hitzfeld's position as Bayern coach has been uncertain since the rumoured interest of the Swiss FA first emerged in November.
That came at a time when Hitzfeld was coming under pressure after a series of draws threatened their place atop the Bundesliga and in the UEFA Cup.
His contract with the Bavarian giants is due to expire in the summer and the indications are that he will not be offered a new deal.
