I'm really enjoying the fact that Pia seems to actually understand what the players she has are actually good at. Tarpley has just been thriving with her sixth sense of being at the right place at the right time, following up on plays, and clinical finishes. HAO has been doing a lovely job of passing the ball and bringing speed to the midfield. A-Rod and Wambach upfront give them a healthy combo of speed and power, and have you been noticing how willing Wambach has been to make that extra pass, it's already resulted in several goals.
She's also all about substituting, showing her willingness to really figure her players out, and actually showing faith in them. Having two players that played with Frankfurt shows she's also really planning ahead, trying to give her team every advantage. She hasn't played Whitehill, one of the most experienced players on the team, probably because she doesn't matchup in the new speed emphasis of the team. All of these things show beyond the Solo controversy why Ryan was a bad coach because she's having them do exact opposites of what Ryan told them to do because he only understood the long ball qualities of Wambach and Whitehill. Hopefully she is noticing that Scurry is really digging her own grave. I mean even if Scurry was still at the same quality as Solo she still cannot kick to save her life. This has apparently resulted in her defenders being leary of passing back to her, all things that can drastically effect game plans. But every game that she has recently played in it has been a matter of her reflexes not being up to snuff. Solo's NK screwup was similar to Scurry's in the Finland game in the sense that she let a ball go through her hands. The differences, however, are important because on top of that Scurry was also in a bad position and she reacted too late. These have been consistent problems for her in every game she has played recently, and I don't know if you are being honest with yourself, how you can miss out on these important points. All I can think is that Barney has been absolutely horrible in camp, and maybe Scurry has been on fire when it hasn't counted. I'm hoping now that the college season is over, there will be many more goalies called up to camp. Other than that most things have been positive for the team and they actually look like they're having fun out there again, which makes games both fun to watch and play. |

USA wins 4 Nations with a 1-0 victory over China, with a header by Boxx. Lindsey Tarpley was player of the tourney with 4 goals. The starting lineup for the US:
Solo Lopez [Cox] Sauerbrunn Rampone Chalupny Lloyd Boxx O'Reilly Cheney Wambach Tarpley The first half of the game not so good with people like Cox resorting back to long ball when the Chinese put the pressure and speed on, old habits die hard. Solo comming up with nice saves that probably would not have worked out so well with Scurry. During the half Pia managed to reign them in and they seemed to sort themselves out for a much better second half. I didn't really get the Tarpley/Wambach up top, giving up on any speed up top, and not puting Tarp in position to be the clean up that she is so good at. Once A-Rod got in things seemed to work out better, giving them more options. I do like that Chalupny is playing in the back, since she's one of those players that can run the entire field all game long and seemingly never gets tired. Pia was also all about substituting, and not always obvious choices. Tarpley M/F, Wambach F, HAO M/F, Boxx M, Lloyd M, Chalupny D/M, and Rampone D I believe started every game, so I would speculate that these players are relatively safe (I would probably put Solo in the safe as well), and Pia is probably trying to build a team around them. She also seems to be pretty high on Sauerbrunn on defense and A-Rod up front. I think the other 10 positions for the olympics are pretty wide open since a lot of the newbies are doing very well, and several of the veterans are lacking consistent fitness and the pace that Pia is emphasizing. So far so good... |

Ah well - I shouldn't have waited until the last possible moment to vote, and then go for China
I was thinking of going for Finland just for the fun of it (knowing they were bottom) |
