Sky sports are reporting that Defoe can leave if he wants hes no longer required by the club!

Hes not my favorite player and hes goal scoreing ratio is not high.

But others love him !

Shocked

Does ths mean Bent will get more starts?

will we replace defoe?
Question

Defoe has admitted to it apparently but has said he wants to stay at the club he loves. I'm a big fan of defoe he has been so patient and hasnt spoken out nearly as much as anyone else might, but it could be a good thing as bent will then be able to show what hes made of more than he has so far. We all know bent is normally a cool finisher just he ahsnt shown it so far because of limited chances.

I'd like to keep Defoe but wouldnt be the end of the world if he left.

I'd agree with that sentiment there.
On his day Defoe can be exceptional.

Apparently Ramos said he can go but Defoe has responded by saying he wants to stay and fight for his place.

Defoe wants to stay and fight for his place (lol) so he can go on a bosman at the end of the season and therefore demand a signing on fee for him and his agent and higher wages ala Sol Campbell.

As I mentioned in another thread recently:

Defoe has apparently scored more goals per minute played than any other Premiership player this season. It may not seem like he scores all that often, but he's actually doing pretty well considering the limited opportunities he's been getting of late; he's currently scoring one goal every 102 minutes.

I quite like Defoe and wouldn't mind at all if we managed to hold on to him. The problem is that the Defoe/Bent situation isn't going to be sustainable for the long-term so something has to give sooner or later. Of the two of them, I'm not particularly fussed which one we keep. If we play with a creative midfielder who actually has some vision and passing ability (The Huddster for example), then I think Bent and his ability to run the line would create a lot of goals. Defoe is more of a scrappy opportunist and will get goals from all sorts of situations.

They're both top players and they're both suited to different styles of play. Horses for courses and all that. Smile

Also, Defoe has another 18 months left on his current contract (I think), so is it really an immediate problem?

His goals for minutes played This Season might be high but compare bents figures v defoes over 3 or more seasons .... or Keans ...

sorry to say defoe cannot hold a candle up to either in the last few seasons ....

Just being good when your contract is up for renewal is not good enough!

There may have been more speculation this season about the future of Jermain Defoe than any other player in the Barclays Premier League, but Juande Ramos, the Tottenham Hotspur head coach, wants the striker to stay at White Hart Lane. Reports that Ramos had told Defoe that he could leave appeared to signal that the long-running saga of the player’s future would reach a climax, with Martin O’Neill, the Aston Villa manager, eager to sign the player. But Ramos is apparently more than keen for the England forward to stay.

“People say things when they are a little bit down or upset,” Defoe said of the head coach. “He pulled me the next day and said he didn’t mean it [that Defoe could leave]. He was honest with me. He said he wanted me to stay and get goals and said he wanted to achieve something special. He is a good manager with great ideas, so it’s good. I said to him: ‘What do you think? Am I part of it?’ He said: ‘Yes, you are definitely part of it. If you get a chance, take it.’

“There are four top forwards here and I understand that. The competition is hard and if you get a chance you have to take it. Maybe it was psychology, but it’s something I don’t think about. I just want to do my best for the team.”

Ramos made Defoe captain for the match against Sunderland on Saturday and fans were split about the significance of the gesture. Did it imply that it was Defoe’s last appearance for the club, or was it a way of boosting his confidence?

“It was a mad one, really,” Defoe said. “It was a bit embarrassing because I knew the boys would give me stick. I was getting a massage when the manager came in and said: ‘How do you feel about being captain?’ When someone says that, for a club like this, it is amazing.

“For me, it was special. I have always said I want to stay and the fans showed their appreciation. I love the boys, they are a great bunch of lads, and I think we can do something special.”

Defoe handed the armband to Robbie Keane when he replaced him in the second half. Keane, who scored his 100th goal for Spurs, said that the captaincy would have meant a great deal to Defoe. “When Martin Jol [Ramos’s predecessor] made me the captain for the first time, it was a great honour,” he said. “Jermain is only 5ft; he was about 8ft before the game.”

Ramos played down the significance of giving Defoe the captaincy ? “I had to choose somebody” ? but Keane underlined his fellow striker’s status at the club. “You have to understand that Jermain is one of the longest-serving players who was on that pitch today,” he said.

what worries me is that if defoe is staying has he signed a new contract yet?

or are we prepared to keep him until his contract runs out then he goes to another London rival on a free?

seems to me we fell for that trick once and are prepared to fall for it again!

oh well lets throw another £10m away ....

or he signs a new contract then spends the next 2 years on the bench again!

why so our rivals cant have him?
