John Mackie's 22nd-minute strike wrecked Southend's hopes of reclaiming the top spot in League Two.
The central defender rose to head home a Matt Lockwood corner after the visitors had dominated the early stages of the game.

The goal came seven minutes after Daryl McMahon had hit the Southend woodwork.

Adam Barrett came closest for the home side, stabbing wide from eight yards while Orient keeper Lee Harrison pulled off several fine saves.
