Benin coach Reinhard Fabisch says he was asked before the Squirrels' Africa Cup of Nations match against Mali if he would help fix the game's outcome.

Benin lost the Group B match 1-0 after conceding a penalty at the start of the second half.

"He wanted to find out from me if there was any possibility of manipulating the match," Fabisch said of the approach.

"I told him: 'Look, you have two minutes to leave the hotel or I will call the police'."

Fabisch was approached by a man who spoke to him at the team's hotel on Saturday, two days before Benin's opening match against Mali in Sekondi.

"I cut him short and told him to leave. It doesn't help football.

"I assume that if someone approaches you like that, then they have that (money) in mind."

Subsequently Fabisch warned his players to tell him if they were approached.

Benin next play Ivory Coast in Sekondi on Friday.

Shame to hear.

Fair play to the coach for turning down the money. Hardly surprising in an African game tbh

Possible that maybe he told someone to give away the penalty?

You do hear of a lot of corruption in Africa though, especially in politics..

Namibia have been the latest team approached Rolling Eyes

Quote:
Namibia players have claimed they were approached to fix their final group match at the Africa Cup of Nations.

They say they were offered $30,000 per player to throw their game against Guinea in Sekondi on Monday.

Namibia Football Association president John Muinjo said his players spoke to him and he informed the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

The incident follows an alleged approach to Benin coach Reinhard Fabisch before the tournament.

Fabisch said the man claimed to represent a company based in Singapore that was be able to fix football matches across Africa.

Although Namibia have only a slim mathematical chance of progressing at the tournament, Muinjo said that the players did not consider taking the money.

"My players were approached by a man saying he represented a syndicate and offered them money to lose the game," he said.

"The players came to me immediately to tell me and we've informed CAF of what has happened.

"The players were offered up to $30,000 to lose the game.

"They were offered half in advance but told they had to be able during the game to manipulate the score on the instructions of the syndicate."

Muinjo said he had immediately called a meeting with the squad, warning them of the dangers of bribery.

"I'm very proud that my players came to see me straight away.

"I warned them about the impact accepting these sorts of offers could have on their careers.

"They are a team who believe in fair play."

Caf officials say that an investigation into the matter has been started.

Its so unique.

shock horror - africans involved in corruption.

this wasnt isolated, some other african nation came forward and said they too were approached.

this begs the question of how many nations took the cash and kept quiet? i said at the start of the tournament that the winner will be the team that pays the most money, unsuprisingly it looks like i was right.

and they wonder why nobody cares about their football tournaments?

Well, the better football sides are winning and these corruptions have been reported.

The tournament has been exceptionally good and the competition is superb.

The discipline and the quality of all standards have been impressive. If the winners win it because of something corrupt then it'll be a shame - but so far, the better football sides are playing well and winning accordingly. All looks plain fair to me.
