i thought bentley was average but thats my opinion. joe cole was motm for me by far. Rooney looked hungry but that first half was hard to stomach. i think before there next game is it france? they will need to work on set pieces. other than that good start for fabio

I watched most of this game but was also tracking the Ireland v Brazil match. But from what I could see, I didn’t see Bentley do much either. He got a few balls into the box but he also had a lot of his crosses blocked. He wasn’t involved with any of the goals and, unless I missed some of his best moves, I don’t recall a goal scoring chance he made. Alan Hansen saying that the big plus of the night was Bentley’s performance was way over the top.

Rooney played well, as did Joe Cole. Jenas scored and nearly got another, but for me this wasn’t about individual performances. This was about seeing England develop as a team, as a unit. In that respect, we should take plenty of heart. There were many flaws but that’s what you would want at this early stage. You need the areas for improvement to be highlighted now so you can work on them when the crunch time comes. Defensively we were pretty sound, but the goal was sloppy by Rio’s standards. He was caught flat footed tracking the striker’s run and by the time he got there the ball hit the back of the net. David James was lucky right at the end flapping at that cross but overall we defended solidly.

Not a great game by any means but a sound performance.

shaq2wade i agree, i really wasn't impressed with Bently and have seen him play alot better. Didn't really see any good proformances out there. James did ok until his customry flap from a corner. Ashley cole was poor and Wes brown was shocking. For fergie to say Brown is the best natural Englishg defender is a joke. Glad to see Young out there. Can't wait for John Terry and Lamps to come back

Me and my Dad went and it was really good - first time inside Wembley - really good stadium.

Stevie G should never have got MOTM - that should have gone to Gareth Barry or Waz. Cashley Cole and Wes Brown had shockers, and Joe Cole played well. Was very impressed with Ashley Young when he came on as well.

Yes we did boo after 30 minutes, but I'm not sure if it was caught on telly what had actually happened. Something was said by the Swiss PA woman, and the Swiss fans went mad, and every time Ashley Cole or Jenas got the ball, they booed. So all the England fans started to boo the Swiss fans, and then every time Cashley made a mistake, he was booed by us as well (seeing as he did nothing good it seemed it was every time he got the ball)

Good game though. Oh, and who was it that said 2-1 England...

Something tells me Lamps is gonna have to fight for his place, I doubt he'll be thrown in the mix of things right away.

I can't see Lampard getting in to be honest. It'd take Gerrard to have some real shockers, but after his nerves settled (by the second half) he did do quite well. Was instrumental in both goals.

Terry will probably make his way back alongside someone. Perhaps Upson, or Lescott, or Wes Brown - maybe Ledley King too. Could even recall Carragher.

I wasn't particularly impressed with Bentley either. A lot of his crosses were poor. He certainly didn't deserve all the praise he got, and he certainly wasn't ''fantastic'' which is what one of the pundits said.

Rooney worked hard and did a lot that was good, but also did a lot that wasn't and wasted chances. He isn't clinical enough or the right type of player to play on his own up front. I think he looked better in midfield.

Gerrard did okay, didn't deserve man of the match but did play a big part in both goals. Good, but nothing to write home about.

James was okay. He made a couple of good stops, but didn't look particularly convincing at the end. It was his first start for England in years though. Still, it was one of the best performances from and England goal keeper in quite some time... Simply because he didn't make a howler or a costly error, not because it was good.

Joe Cole was my pick for man of the match, and i'm usually critical of him for trying tricks and never getting anywhere. That wasn't the case yesterday. Sublime skill.

thats pathetic.

the 'fans' should think about getting behind the new manager and encouraging the players on the pitch, that way you wouldnt even hear the Swiss fans.

this is why i would never go to an England game.

dreadful embarassing support.

booing opposition fans? whats that all about? what kind of message does that give to the players?

disgraceful, utterly disgraceful.

I echo that. I have been before and the support is embarassing. We have two songs that are quite frankly embarassing, including 'i know i am, im sure i am, im England till i die'. Really? thank god for your support. If they are not singing that its booing the team or the opposition.

I mean what sort of morons boo the players for trying to keep possesion, which is what happened on wed. England couldnt go forward so went back, kept the ball and played patiently. WOuld they rather two passes then a hoof up field? I am pretty sure what followed this paitent play was a goal attempt. Some people that attend matches are idiots.

i agree with most of this. Bentley's crossing on many occasions was poor. There is no doubting the lads ability but half the time he didnt even look up before trying to put the ball into the box. I definetly believe he can make that position his own, but he was not amazing on wed. Did have few moments where he looked fantastic. That 60 yard pass to Rooney. That neat little pass to Jenas, who should have delivered an early ball into the box. I think what hampered him was the lack of movement from the players around him at times.

Again, Gerrard was no way MOM, that was laughable. only made two real indents on the match, all be it, both improtant ones which led to goals, but a typical ENgland performance for him.

For me was very impressed with Rooney once again as with my MOM Joe Cole. Seems to always deliver for ENgland. Very consistant performer and great skill for the goal.

Laughing

exactly.

there were chants of 'theres only one david beckham'. what sort of moron would chant that at a game he is not even involved in? what sort of message does that give out to the rest of the squad? are these not the same people ridiculing McClaren and Sven for the clique that existed prior to Capello's reign and the 'caps for the boys' mentality?

i swear i would have smacked somebody in the face if i was at that game and i caught somebody nearby singing that or booing.

they are clueless, brainless idiots who make me ashamed of my country even more so than the lacklustre performances of the players under McClaren.

also interesting to note the minutes silence for the Munich crash lasted a mere 23 seconds because the england 'fans' disrupted it throughout.

well done boys.

You should've heard some of the comments made by the fans after the game on setanta sports news.

Well i watched most of the game and my impression was that pretty much every facet of the English play was more precise and confident. They actually played like a team for periods of the game and the "long ball" was a little more restricted than usual.

Good signs.

I was at the game too (no random booing though, we get enough of that at league games) dont tar all fans with the same brush, just becuase some drunk moron cant keep quiet for 60 seconds doesnt mean everyones like it.

Anways, after a (very) slow start I think the signs were promising. Im not sure how people can moan at a change of formation and/or personel we havent exactly been setting the world alite with 4-4-2 and the identical line up weve had the last couple of years or so have we?

Just look at egypt in the african cup of nations. No Eto, Drogba or Essien but they were solid and played as a team. Change can only be a good thing having failed to even qualify for euro 2008 so I for 1 hope mr Capello carrys on selecting players on merit (eg jenas) and not on reputation and does try and impliment a new formation.
