New Cork City striker Dave Mooney was named FAI eircom League Player of the Year on Sunday night.

Mooney starred with relegated Longford Town in 2007, scoring 19 Premier Division goals despite the midlanders’ struggles.

Last week, he signed a three-year deal at Turners Cross, where he will again link up with former Longford boss Alan Mathews.

Mooney pipped PFAI Player of the Year Brian Shelley and Bohemians goalkeeper Brian Murphy to the eircom League award.

Fair play to the lad, it's a great achievement to win player of the year when his team finished bottom of the league, 19 league goals for Longford was great and he should do even better now that he'll have some better quality to set him up at Cork.

Haha yeah you would never see someone from Derby winning it, its too crazy to even think of it happening!

To be fair to the lad though he seems like a real quality player from what Ive seen. A lot of clubs in England were interested in him, Sunderland inevitably along with Crystal Palace, Wolves & Sheff Utd but he chose Cork in the end

O'Donovan should have chosen a Championship team though, the step up from Irish football straight into the Premiership is too much. Championship football isnt that huge a step up so it would have made more sense, Doyle being the obvious example of that.

Mooney will more than likely end up in England eventually but its good to see a player like him staying in the country, theres a lot of money around now at clubs like Bohs, Cork, Drogheda & St Pats so hopefully we can hold onto players instead of them moving to England at the first opportunity

I agree with what you're saying about O'Donovan there, it was too big a jump in one go.

Good to see Mooney decided to stay in the Eircom, but for how long I wonder - if he does go over the water he should 'do a Doyle' and work his way up, it would do his own personal development football-wise a lot of good.

It's interesting for the fans over here to have such a vested interest in Sunderland, because of the irish connections - but I feel it could ultimately be many a young Irish player's downfall by being lured over to such a level too soon.

Yeah every season we get a load of young players moving to England and most never make it. Shame because if they stay in our own league for a few years more then they could make a name for themselves & get plenty of experience then move when theyre mature enough. Probably wont happen any time soon though unless an irish team makes the CL Group Stages regularly
