Meaning no disrespect to Ireland but don't understand how Trapattoni isn't the manager of one of the top clubs in Europe, now it seems he is leaving red Bull Salzburg and joining Ireland as manager at the end of the Austrian season.
He has managed Juve and Italy so what has happened? I though there would be clubs clamouring for his experience

I agree, however the type of money that the FAI are offering would be difficult to resist. Also he is turning 70 in March, a National job must be more appealing than club football now.

He is another Italian who likes his privacy, and I think the Irish will give him time to work and build a team because he is such a big name.

Agreed. I am sure he is looking to move into a less involved day to day intensive job and international management is probably perfect.

The Irish Football Association have revealed that voluntary salary sponsorship allowed the confirmation of Giovanni Trapattoni as the new manager of the Republic of Ireland.

Former Italy boss Trapattoni will take charge of the Republic when he leaves Red Bull Salzburg at the end of the season and his first game in charge will be the friendly against Serbia on 24th May at Croke Park.

The appointment brings to an end the FAI's lengthy search for a successor to former manager Steve Staunton and chief executive John Delaney has now revealed that financial assistance was received from an Irish businessman to help the process.

Delaney has confirmed that Denis O'Brien volunteered to sponsor part of Ireland's new manager's salary, which allowed the FAI to 'raise the bar' in their search.

"No stone was left unturned in its (the FAI's) efforts to secure the best possible person for the position," said Delaney in a press conference on Sky Sports News.

Supportive

"During this period an Ireland supporter contacted the association and indicated that he was very supportive of what we were trying to do.

"And that he would be prepared to sponsor part of the new manger's salary in order to ensure that money was not an insurmountable obstacle to getting the best possible person for the position.

"I spoke to him and he stressed that he did not want to offer the decision or want tickets or sponsorship opportunities in return.

"He continually stated that the reason for his offer was to put together the type of package to attract a top quality manager.

"This offer of financial assistance was a pivotal moment in the recruitment process because it enabled us to raise the bar higher than we had intended.

O'Brien gratitude

"I would like on behalf of the FAI and every Ireland fan to extend our deep gratitude to businessman Denis O'Brien for his gesture."

Meanwhile, Ray Houghton - who was on the FAI panel charged with finding Staunton's successor - has stated his belief that Trapattoni is the man to take Ireland to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"We believe 100 per cent this is the man to take the team forward," Houghton said of Trapattoni - who has six Serie A titles with Juventus and one with Internazionale to his name.

"You can't fault his credentials. He has an unbelievable passion for the game which is like Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

"The first thing he said was that he wants to come and wants to take the team forward to 2010."

Great stuff. Very Happy

As you all said he rather a "part time" job as Irish one than a full time with a club.

Italian football invades the British-Irish side, it's funny because the British love to insult Italian football

Good luck Trap, let's reach togheter WC2010 !

Should be a great appointment for us, hard to believe we managed to get someone of his class, especially considering so,me of the people who were favourites at one stage or another.

Hes getting on in years now but im sure he'll do a good job and hopefully bring us to the next World Cup.

Credit to that O'Brien guy for giving a few million of his own money to fund the move

Well the Irish don't really insult Italian football at all. The brand of football in Italy is certainly my favourite anyway.

Don't relate us to the Brits. Wink

Master-stroke. He's getting on, and as far as i'm aware, hasn't been as successful in his latter years. But still, he is one of the best managers to ever grace the game.

Well he won the austrain league with Salzburg last year by 18 points or something. So he must still have a good left in the tank.

Tardelli to be Republic assistant

Tardelli scored in Italy's victory in the 1982 World Cup final
The FAI has confirmed that former Italy star Marco Tardelli is to become assistant manager to new Republic of Ireland team boss Giovanni Trapattoni.
Tardelli, 53, who went on to coach Inter Milan, played under Trapattoni at Juventus in the 1970s and 80s.

"Giovanni and I have a great desire to do well," Tardelli told an Italian radio station.

"I like the idea of being for Giovanni what Carlos Queiroz is for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United."

Tardelli was in the Italy side which won the World Cup in Spain in 1982 and scored the second goal in their 3-1 victory over West Germany.

As a coach he led the Italian Under-21 side to victory at the 2000 European Championship.

He then had spells in charge of Inter, Bari and Arezzo in Italy, and Egypt's national team.

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Liam Brady, who played with Tardelli at Juventus, is also considering working in the new set-up.

We are certs to win the World Cup now
