Background

- 5 qualifying berths
- 53 nations
- Preliminary round played to narrow down to 48 nations
- South Africa qualify automatically due to being the host nation. They will still play in the qualifying rounds
- 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification doubling as qualification for the 2010 African Cup of Nations (Angola)

- 10 lowest ranking nations
- Five knockout ties
- Home and Away fixtures

Original Draw
Madagascar - Comoros
Somalia - Swaziland
Sγo Tomι and Prνncipe - Central African Republic
Sierra Leone - Guinea-Bissau
Seychelles - Djibouti

Sγo Tomι and Prνncipe and Central African Republic withdrew from the competition. So the top two ranking nations advance and another draw took place.

First Group Round

- 12 groups winners and 8 best runners-up advancing to the second group round

Group 1: Cameroon, Cape Verde, Tanzania, Mauritius
Group 2: Guinea, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya
Group 3: Angola, Benin, Uganda, Niger
Group 4: Nigeria, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone
Group 5: Ghana, Libya, Gabon, Lesotho
Group 6: Senegal, Algeria, Liberia, Gambia
Group 7: Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Botswana, Madagascar
Group 8: Morocco, Thiopia, Rwanda, Mauritania
Group 9: Tunisia, Burkina Fasco, Burundi, Seychelles
Group 10: Mali, Congo, Sudan, Chad
Group 11: Togo, Zambia, Eritrea, Swaziland

Second Group Round

- Five groups of four
- Winners of each group will qualify
*top three in each group will also qualify for the African Cup of Nations
**If South Africa advance to this stage, the team will play in the relevant group and any points won will count towards the 2010 African Cup of Nations qualifiers
***If Angola advance to this stage then all teams in the group will automatically advance to 2010 African Cup of Nations

Group 3: Rwanda, Algeria, Egypt, Zambia

It has become very difficult to predict whats gonna happen when it comes to african football, but I hope the six teams to represent the contininent South Africa, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and (of course) the six times african champions who've never been to world cup, Egypt.

Eritrea withdrew from the competition so group 11 only has 3 nations competing. Reason for them withdrawing is not known.
