Newcastle have clinched the signing of midfielder Danny Guthrie from Liverpool.

The Magpies agreed a fee with the Reds earlier on Friday and were given permission to speak with the 21-year-old midfielder.

Guthrie has now put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal to become Kevin Keegan's second summer acquisition after Jonas Gutierrez.

"I'm really happy to be joining Newcastle United," Guthrie told the club's official website.

"I'm ready to get involved straight away and I cannot wait to meet the boys and get started."

Keegan has also expressed his joy at the capture of Guthrie, who spent last season on loan at Bolton.

"I'm absolutely delighted that we've got Danny," said the Newcastle boss.

"He proved himself in the Premier League last season so we know he can play at that level.

"He's at the right age and is a good signing for us."

What really is the point of signing a Liverpool reserve? Could someone please enlighten me? I doubt he will make more than 5 first team appearences.

i have to agree with this. he played for Man Utd at youth level so Keegan can probably see a bit of potential there. Hardly the sort of signing Newcastle should be making though.

Why don't you give him a chance? He is only 21 and he is hardly a Liverpool reserve when he was starting for Bolton last season. I'm not excited about the signing but you are ruling him out before he has a chance.

i think its a fantastic signing.

Toon fanatic Ashely certainly meant business when he took over. if King Kev is not careful he will drown under the tidal wave of ambition that is engulfing St James Park. he is doing well in managing the bucketloads of cash thrown his way.

4th spot beckons

Don't worry West Ham will come and buy him when we are finished with him...
Just like Dyer. What a great waste of money that was!

I know what Dyer is like though, he can be great at times but will never play a full season. His wages are far too high and we wasted a lot of money on him. It was unfair that his leg snapped in two places but he is not worth the money that you spent on him. I would have took half the fee to be honest.

Eduardo has shown that he is good, his finishing was great till he done his leg in.

He hasn't played for Liverpool reserves for two seasons. He's played a year on loan at Southampton and then a year on loan at Bolton (last season). When people go on loan it's generally because they're too good for the reserves and need to prove themselves and develop playing regularly. Few ever get the chance to go on loan to a Premier League club but Guthrie did and if you don't know he was a big hit with Bolton and their fans.

For what is the sake of £1m, £2m maximum there really is very little risk. He could develop into an established Premier League player, he could just go on to be a good bit-part squad player, but for such a small fee there's little really that can go wrong. His time at Bolton should be enough to suggest he won't be a total failure.

I don't think any player could get one club to a CL last 16 AND semi final of the UEFA Cup Laughing

The .co.uk is a crap site. I hardly use it. nufc.com is a bit better but still not great.
