But thats me being biased ive always rated him highly |

I'm a bit excited about this now if it does go through. When it was just speculation i kind of dismissed it. But well done to Keegy if he can wrap this one up. Aimar at his best a few years ago was a top player, i've rated him highly aswell. Bit of a shame he's past his peak now, but i hope we can get something good out of him, and he should be a very useful playmaker in the centre. With him pushing up and creating play and attacks, and Butt playing the holding and covering the defencem we should see a stronger centre mid next season.

I'm quite excited. I hope that the story is true but i know who wrote it. So if he is just making up crap i'm gonna hunt the f*cker down!

Very exciting prospect having Pablo Aimar at Newcastle next season. The obvious downside is his lack of form compared to previous years and injury issues, but it's worth the risk for £7m.
Now, i wonder, are you planning on playing 4-4-2 next season or what? What about the 4-3-3? |

I was thinking the same thing Ben, about formations. I'm guessing it will be the 4-4-2. The reasons for this are because we have bought a winger, we will have milner back fit and we look like we are gonna buy Aimar. At least we will have the option of 4-3-3 if we need it. But we all know that will never work against the better teams. It was still great work from keegan to come up with it last season though.

Though, what would that mean for Owen?
It did seem to suit him better playing in behind the strikers. I suppose he could play "deep" as part of a two man attack (although i still think he's good enough to be more 'out-and-out'). |

i find it hillarious how happy Big Kev Keegan was at landing Danny Guthrie. Classic!

Liverpool should have bought him, although he's been poor this past year or so we can't really judge if he's past his peak until he's about 30, for all we know if could have been a blip and he will reporduce his Valencia days at Newcastle, but then again he could well be past it.... |

Owen was amazing just behind the strikers. He scored goals and linked the midfield to the forwards. However, if he get Aimar he will not to do the that. It will be interesting to see how our attack shapes up in the season. Martins and Owen have hardly played as just a two so its hard to say how well they will do together. And if we get Aimar we could change our whole system for him. Everything could go through him depending on how well he does. |

I’m absolutely gutted. It turns out we have missed out on Aimar and the player will sign for Benfica later this week. I am really [beep!] off about this whole thing. I know football is just a game but it can [beep!] annoy you at times. This signing could have changed things for Newcastle. I know its easy to say this now but he was exactly the type of player this football club needed. I was excited when I first read that we were likely to sign this player. I can remember watching him play for Valencia, when he first went there, and I would have never have thought he would play for the toon, guess I was right. I also read last night that clubs are interested in our very promising goalkeeper, Tim krul. I do not understand why we want to sell him. He has played one game for the club. This was in the UEFA Cup and he pretty much won us the game. I am not just saying this but it was one of the best goalkeeper performances I have seen. Since that game he has been on loan to a few different clubs where he has impressed. I thought he was set to be our keeper for years to come. So why the [beep!] do we want to sell him? FFS!!

I don't think so, but it looks like we will. I bunch of clubs have suddenly become interested.

well it is funny! He is a poor player! A player who I believe is out of his depth in the Premier League. If this is the sign of Newcastle's ambition then expect another sh1t season! The thing that i find funny is how happy Keegan was at landing Guthrie. What a master tactician!!! |

That's sh1t that we've missed out on Aimar. Same as you JJ, it gives you a lift when you hear a player such as Aimar is on the verge of signing for your club. But thats just a kick in the b0llocks.
Bit p1ssed off aswell about talk of Krul going. Given's 32, and Harper's 33. Shay could have a good 6 years before he retires, and he could easily move to another club in that time. Same with Harper, both getting on now. IMO we need to keep a great back-up such as Krul. |

He was a real hit for Bolton last season actually. In an obviously poor side. To say he's out of his depth i think is way off the mark, even if Keegan's response to his signing seemed a little over the top. But he's English, young and had a good season last year, not a poor signing by any means. As for Aimar, thinking about it, it could be a good turn of events, even if it doesn't seem it. Aimar has suffered with form and suffered from injury - has really gone down from his Valencia days and could still struggle with the English league. Too many of Newcastle players are "once great" players, like Owen, Duff, Geremi, Butt, Emre, Viduka etc., and to be honest it's depressing sometimes. Some work but many fail. You need fresh players who are younger - yes you need creativity but you should also be looking for consistency as well, and someone who is "up and coming". I thought it was a shame you missed out on Gokhan Inler to be honest. But let's face it, every manager will have a compiled short-list of potential signings for every position they see the need to strengthen, so whilst Newcastle have missed out on Modric and Aimar they'll just have to turn to their next target. |

Thats fair enough Ben, That is your opinion. i still believe he is of a poor standard. yes he did well at Bolton last season, but at Newcastle, where the expectations are a lot higher i believe he will not amount to much. I think he would be an excellent Championship Player. He is certainly not the type of player i would want to be signing if i wanted to push for Europe this coming season. I wish the lad luck, i always want players who come from Liverpool to have a good succesful career, i just dont think Guthrie cuts it in any way. |

Every team needs fringe players who will give competition to those who are first choice. I am quite happy that we got him for that role. He had a pretty good season at Bolton and from what i hear the fans loved him there. I have also read an interview from Gary Speed. He says it is a great signing and he will do a great job when he is needed. I think you are taking the things that keegan said a bit far. Of course he is gonna be happy. Keegan has probably wanted to sign him for a few months. I don't see the problem with what he has said. To be honest i don't care what you say about the player and you can have your own opinion on the signing but why have a dig at Newcastle? |

After having some time to think about the Aimar deal i think you could be right Ben. Keegan will have to buy a creative player and hopefully Aimar is "past it". I just got a bit excited by the chance of signing him. |
