Bradman has only played about half the matches of the players of this age. Its hard to compare him to players these days because the game is so different. But even so he was a great cricketer, none better than him during his time.

My fav basket player ever was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He's the top scorer in the NBA history, although he's also the man who has played more minutes.

Are we all agreed on Ali as a candidate for the greatest sportsman ever ?

Err no, see my post above on Joe Louis.

Anything you can say Ali brought to the sport, Louis did it more, better, and wtih more class. All the other things Ali supposedly did like promote black rights, help out the poor, whatever wouldnt have even been possible if Louis hadnt lived before him. And if its in the ring, Louis held the title for 11 years! defending it 25 times, not once off hype matches in the jungle or whatever.

i agree with Jono about Joe Louis, another boxer who has not been mentioned is Rocky Marciano. a true warrior who would fight people much heavier than himself and win, the majority of his fights would not even be allowed to happen today and yet he still won every professional fight he had.

on the subject of Joe Louis did any of you know he actually invented the phrase "he can run but he cant hide"?? thats a fact. he contributed a few other sayings im not too sure about to the english language also.

its a question that offers no real answer.

there are many people who have had a significant impact in their fields, Joe Louis, Marciano, Ali, Moore, Pele, Woods, Nicklaus, Bradman, Warne, Montana, Ruth, Jordan. every person will have a different answer as it is down to personal interests really.

Since we can't agree on one person, I say Secretariat should be the winner. Laughing

Maybe... we could have a competition where we decide who was the greatest in each major sport then have battles against each other for overall greatest.

Could be a poll vote thing with a bracket structure until we have one winner.

They've done something like that, actually...

ESPN voted for "Who is now?" trying to find out who the best athlete of our generation. Tiger Woods won that I believe. If you wanna set something similar up, let me know and we could get one running Jono.

Yea just like the ESPN one, ive seen a bit of that. Ill have a think but we could run it in one thread and just change the poll like a MOTM thread, ie post the sport, ask for nominations, vote on nominees, announce winner, add winner to original post, start again on next sport. Not sure how many voters we would get but worth a try.

Yea it wouldnt work just us trying to decide on one as I think we (me very muchly) are too stubborn.
That is why we could do it by vote, set up a poll, vote, winner is clear! Unless its a tie and then we will figure something else out lol.

how about swimming star Eric the Eel!???

he put racial equality in swimming baths back about 50 years and was a walking (or swimming i should say) racial stereotype.

Honestly I don't think any recent cyclist deserves a mention, least of all him. Doping is not the right way to achieve something in sport
