Jono, you can't go saying he's better than players like Gerrard and Mascherano yet. No way. Maybe in the future he could be, but not yet.

Anyway, i'm not bothered about losing out on him. I didn't really want him anyway. I want a proper winger, not a central midfielder that would get shoved out on the wing. Gimme Silva over him any day.

Do you think we will actually sign anyone like Silva though? I'm a bit worried about the summer 'cause time after time we keep failing to bring a top class winger in, after missing out on the likes of Ronaldo, Simao, Alves etc. I hope we make it our priority and bring someone high profile in else we're really gonna struggle to make the next step up.

I kinda fear the money spent on Mascherano around February will dent Rafa's potential spending. Although surely Hicks will be desperate to win the fans over; the best possible way being to bring in quality players. He wants to be the hero and get on side so i wouldn't be shocked if he did find enough money from somewhere (loans).

And as i said before, d'you reckon Barry could work at left-back?

And are you sure Rodriguez is available on a free? I've not seen anyone mention it, with most reporters suggesting we're going to bid £18million for him!

A big issue is that Rafa doesn't like wingers because they are lazy and don't work hard enough for the team, he seems to much prefer wingers who are attacking midfielders/strikers he can play out wide but who aren't wingers in the way that Robben is a winger. I think he sees the wide positions as a position for workhorse industrious types who are more team players than for flair players.

There may be something to that, but i don't think it's totally true. Pennant is a winger, as are Simao and Mancini, with Alves capable (each three we've had offers rejected for in the past couple of seasons). He has gone after proper wingers but he's struggled with teams asking too much of us financially. When he uses the likes of Kuyt there, or Cisse, he's sort of making do with what he has as much as anything.

I don't look at it as replacing Babel. Rafa likes to rotate, and Babel makes a much greater impact as a sub. They could rotate in midfield, or one could play on the wing, while the other accompanies Torres up front.

When we play 4-4-2, one of the two will go on the wing, the other up front.

When we play 4-2-3-1, they will rotate for a place on the wing.

Or we could scrap that idea and get Maxi Rodriguez on a free.

But i still think we need another striker - someone capable of leading the frontline adequately in Torres' absence. Someone with cutting edge, someone devastating.

Huntelaar or Aguero maybe.

But then that means bringing in Maxi Rodriguez AND a top class striker. If we sign Farfan, it would be like killing two birds with one stone. He could solve both problems, but, there's still be plenty of room in the team for Babel to feature heavily.

How much would Farfan cost though? That's what i'm thinking about... can't see us going for two wingers if they're both quite pricey.

Liverpool SET TO SNAP UP £4M BARGAIN

Liverpool target Amantino Mancini could move to Anfield for a cut-price £4million this summer.

The Brazilian winger is set to turn down a new deal at Roma - and could buy out the remaining year of his contract under new FIFA rules.

Roma would then be owed £4m in compensation but that would be a big loss for a player valued at about £10m.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez saw a bid for Mancini, 27, rebuffed by Roma last summer but he is likely to have more luck this time.

"I am coming out of an unlucky spell and I need to feel important again," Mancini told the Mirror. "I won't speak about my contract until the end of the season."

There is also increasing optimism at Anfield that the chance of playing Champions League football next season will be the key to luring Gareth Barry to Merseyside from Aston Villa in the summer.

In addition, Barry is desperate to become an England regular and knows that playing alongside Steven Gerrard would be a major boost to his international ambitions.

I know Mancini hasn't had a good season for Roma, but i would not say no to him being one of two probable wingers arriving in the summer - not for £4million. A new club could do him good.

HUGES RULES OUT WINGER DEPARTURE?

One player who, it would seem, Liverpool won't be signing is Blackburn's David Bentley.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Blackburn boss Mark Hughes has told Bentley to forget about a glamour move out of Ewood Park.

Liverpool and Chelsea are thought to want the 23-year-old winger - and they may be joined in the hunt by Manchester United, after the £20million-rated England star admitted that he was considering his future.

Blackburn boss Hughes has already bolted the door on Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts - and both were left out while they came to terms with the manager's refusal to sell them.

Hughes insists that Bentley, or anyone else, will get exactly the same treatment. Hughes said: "Players are employed, they are under contract, and the decision on whether or not they see out the length of their contract doesn't depend on them - it depends on me or the chairman.

"Some managers think that if a player wants out and is unhappy, then he has to go. But I don't take that view.
"Once players are told they are not leaving they have to get their heads down and work hard."

Earlier this year Bentley signed a new contract up until 2011 and has since been offered another pay rise, but he said: "I want to play European football, I want to play at the top of my game. I want to go to the World Cup in two years and I want to be starting - so sometimes you have to make strong decisions."

The price for Bentley worries me. He's never worth £20million, no matter how highly you rate him. And if we were going to go English i'd prefer Ashley Young; our squad has a real lack of pace that Bentley wouldn't ease, whereas Young would. And ability wise they're both very good.

ATLETICO COY ON RODRIGUEZ

Remaining on foreign shores, Atletico Madrid sports chief Jesus Garcia Pitarch has failed to rubbish claims of Liverpool's interest in captain Maxi Rodriguez.

Asked if Maxi will leave for Liverpool in the summer, Pitarch told AS: "In January we met with clubs who were interested in several of our players.

"Atletico is a club that is always improving and part of that improvement is being able to maintain the good players that we have."

Nothing new really. If we got him for free i'd be very happy.

Man Utd & Liverpool TO DO BATTLE FOR £12M STRIKER

Manchester United and Liverpool are set to do battle for Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz come the opening of the summer transfer window. (various)

The former Bayern Munich man has been an instant success in the Premier League since signing for Rovers last summer for a fee in the region of £3-4 million.

Santa Cruz, 26, has scored just under 20 goals for Rovers this season and has caught the attention of both Rafa Benitez and Sir Alex Ferguson. It is believed both will make bids in the region of £12 million.

I feel Santa Cruz has the capability to play for either of the sides in question. Santa Cruz has played European football for Bayern, which is a bonus and he also has a terrific international record for Paraguay, scoring just under 20 goals in 57 appearances.

We could well need a replacement for Crouch and Santa Cruz would, from this seasons showing, be more than adept. Can't see him sacrificing first team football though.

Liverpool JOIN Arsenal IN RACE FOR HENRY

Liverpool and Arsenal are both chasing in the transfer market for more experienced players and Thierry Henry is no a target for both clubs

Thierry Henry looks as a certain exit from Barcelona. He is not a certainty in the first team and a move back to England is an option for the French international.

Henry left Arsenal last season and jumped at the chance to join Barcelona. But now it looks as if the "dream of Barcelona" never turned out as it was supposed to do.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez would love to see Torres and Henry up front at Anfield and Henry knows how passionate the Liverpool fans are.

It could be that Arsene Wenger will have to see Henry turning him down for a second time and join rivals Liverpool.

Didn't he say he would only return to Arsenal if he came back to England? I don't see him leaving Barcelona at all, let alone joining us. And the only reason i'd have him would be to mould Babel.

yeah i think people dont realise how much he loved Arsenal and by what i have read before he left and since arriving at Barcelona i am convinced he would never join any Premiership club again unless it was Arsenal . He said he could never do that as it would feel like betraying the fans that worshipped him at Arsenal .

Did Sol Campbell or Rooney_79586.shtml'>Wayne Rooney say that before they left Spurs and Everton ... Wink

I think Pennant was singed purely on the the basis to feed Crouch but he's since decided to play neither. He could of signed Simao though surely because At. Madrid are a smaller team than Liverpool so he must of had the chance and said no. I'm aware he's linked with real wingers all the time but could that not be media and fan driven as opposed to there being a lot of truth in it? I think in so far as he plays the system he does, their is no need for a real winger because Torres needs through balls not crosses and with one up front the wingers need to score goals too hence why he goes for forwards who can play out wide not actual wingers. Benitez isn't about glorious football he's a defensive coach so it seems unlikely he will buy lightweight winners who can't/won't track back to make the formation a 4-5-1 when Liverpool haven't got the ball.

I'm pretty sure Simao rejected us, not the other way round. As did Malouda, who's also a proper winger.

We were after Simao for for about 3 years, so it's highly unlikely when he finally did decide to leave Benfica we pulled out at the last minute.

As for Mancini and Maxi, can you imagine if we sign both of them for just £4m?!?! That would be the bargain of the century!

I seem to remember we missed out on Simao 'cause they raised the price by about £2million, from around £12m. Or that could've been Alves.

We definitely had offers in for him anyway. As with Malouda like Sticky said (i forgot him).

Anyway, now we've lost Chelsea we need Dani Alves, Phillip Lahm, David Silva, Karim Benzema and David Villa. Well, i wouldn't be surprised if some overreacted like that. People have even called for Rafa's head, so it's expected.

I hope we do use May to try and wrap up a few signings - after the Euro Champs it'll be much more difficult, assuming the player is involved.

Liverpool's move for Simao Sabrosa has broken down after Benfica demanded £13.6million for the Portuguese winger.

Simao was given permission to travel to Merseyside for talks with the European champions but the deal floundered when Liverpool refused to increase their initial offer of £7million beyond £10.2million.

Benfica sporting director Jose Veiga admitted the 25-year-old would be disappointed in not having secured a move to Anfield but insists the player will still give his all for the Lisbon club.

Veiga told the Renascenca radio station: "I am convinced that Simao will not be against us because he is a great professional and he has proved this throughout the years he has played for Benfica.

"He is the captain of this team and knowing the spirit of sacrifice, I know that he will put his soul and body into it in order to help us achieve success."

Simao came through the Sporting Lisbon youth system before moving to Barcelona in a £7million deal in 1999.

After two campaigns in Spain, he returned to his homeland with Benfica, who he helped to win the 2004 Portuguese Cup and last season's SuperLiga title.

Earlier, Reds boss Rafael Benitez had defended his handling of the Michael Owen transfer saga.

The Liverpool boss confirmed he had no intention of matching Newcastle's club record offer for Owen, having seen the England striker move to Real Madrid for £8million a year ago.

Benitez reveals he wanted Owen to publicly state he did not want to go to Newcastle - which would have wiped the Geordies' bid off the table - before Liverpool could do business. In the end, Benitez said: "The deal was impossible."

He was keen on Simao, Benfica's captain who can play on either flank, and would have finally solved Benitez's desperate chase for a right-sided attacking option

So what it sounds like, is we were close to signing him and they upped the asking price, instead of making it clear initially they wanted more than the £10m we offered.

So they strung us along and slapped us in the face, hoping we'd still go for it because we'd pursued it that far. We didn't stand for it though.

How many players have we lost out on for the sake of a couple of million in recent years? No wonder Rafa doesn't like Parry.

Simao? Alves? Mancini? Quaresma? Ronaldo (not totally sure about what happened here)? Kuyt (the first time anyway)? Probably a few more to add to that list as well.

Some rumours (the Barry interest has since been confirmed):

Quote:
PETER CROUCH SET TO RETURN TO ASTON VILLA IN £14M GARETH BARRY DEAL

GARETH Barry has moved a significant step closer to joining Liverpool this summer with Martin O'Neill set to take Peter Crouch in part-exchange. Barry is expected to join the Reds in a deal worth around £14million with Crouch and £8million coming Villa's way.

There were reports on Merseyside today that Liverpool have formally made a £10 million bid – but O'Neill values the player significantly higher.

Dialogue between the clubs is understood to have reached an advanced stage with an agreement close.
Despite a keenness to hang on to his influential skipper, O'Neill has already sounded out Chelsea's Steve Sidwell as a cut-price replacement.

Barry's recent words that he now has to be "selfish" in his pursuit of footballing honours told O'Neill that any hopes he has of getting him to sign a contract extension are fruitless.

It means Barry will almost certainly be waving goodbye to the Villa Park faithful after tomorrow's game against Wigan.

Crouch's return to the Midlands will soften the blow of losing such a key cog in Villa's machine.

He was signed by Graham Taylor for £5million in March 2002 but struggled to hold down a place under David O'Leary, who loaned him to Norwich City and then sold him to Southampton for £2million.

Crouch scored just six goals in 37 Premiership games for Villa and is now an England regular.
afford to have an opinion, in my opinion.

Quote:
Liverpool LINKED WITH BID FOR GARETH BARRY

Liverpool are understood to have tabled an initial £10million offer for Gareth Barry, the Aston Villa captain. The Merseyside club are believed to have formally contacted Villa yesterday with their bid for the England midfielder.

The 27-year-old has been widely tipped as one of Rafael Benitez's major summer transfer targets but it remains to be seen whether Martin O'Neill, the Villa manager, will accept the bid for the player who signed a new four-year deal with the club in 2006.

Barry, a close friend Steven Gerrard, celebrates the 10th anniversary of making his Villa debut next week, but has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football.

He is on more than £40,000 a week at Villa and could come close to doubling that if he moved to Anfield or Chelsea who have also been linked with the player.

- Source; the Times

As i've said, i hope we sign him for left-back. £10million would be a decent price but i'd expect them to push it up maybe trying for £14million - we could settle on £12million perhaps.

Quote:
Liverpool TARGET £10M BARCA DEFENDER

Liverpool Football Club are planning a summer raid on the Camp Nou.

Rafael Benitez has been handed a healthy transfer kitty for the summer, and reports in Spain suggest he will use £10million in a bid to lure Eric Abidal, who earlier this week admitted he could be on the move at the end of the season.

“There is change in all clubs and it's correct we've not had an entirely successful season,” the France international told RMC. “For now I'm here, if ever the club chooses to sell me, we'll see.”

Benitez is known to have made a left-back one of his priorities when the transfer window reopens, but what do you Reds think about the possible capture of Abidal – would he be a good addition?

- Source; Fans FC

I did think about Abidal, with all the rumours of Lahm joining Barcelona. If we have no other intentions for that position, and he is available, i would be very happy to see us make a bid for him.

Quote:
ALONSO: I AM STAYING

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso says he has no intention of leaving the club following the Champions League exit against Chelsea.

The Spaniard had his sights set on a place in the Moscow final but Chelsea finally undid the Liverpool hoodoo to dump out the five-time champions of Europe.

The unrest in the Anfield boardroom has put the future of manager Rafa Benitez in doubt and rumours have linked Alonso with a move.

“My future is with Liverpool because I signed a contract. There are many rumours but I do not pay attention to them,” Alonso said.

“We are proud of what we have done in the Champions League and we are behind Benitez in the dressing room. I hope to play in more Champions League finals in my career.

“This defeat has hurt us a great deal but we have to show our professionalism and get on with the rest of the season.”

- Source; Setanta

And of course, regardless of Barry, i hope Alonso stays. He's not been very good this season but has so much more to him than we've seen. With a full season starting and avoiding injury he can return to his form of old.

Riise's also expressed concern over his contract, but i haven't quoted that.

The Crouch part exchange for Barry is a bad deal. I hope we don't do it!!!

going by that, they'd only be giving us £6m for Crouch, which is an insult. He has been England's best striker for the last 2 years, so should fetch at least double that in my opinion. And on top of his amazing record for England in recent years, he has also been stunning in the CL and was our overall top scorer last season.

I think Crouch will ultimately sell for less than normal 'cause his contract is down to its final year. Annoying, to say the least.

I don't think we would have offered Crouch in any part exchange though Sticky. Rafa still wants him to resign i'm sure.

Resign lol. You worried me there for a bit. I hope Crouch does re-sign, but i doubt he will. He's behind Kuyt and Torres in the pecking order, and we may end up bringing in another striker who will be ahead of him.

I think Crouch will leave but i cant see him going to Villa as i think hed be behind Carew and Agbonlahor. Carew is much more of a handful for the defenders. Crouch is awful in the air for a person of his stature. Hes not strong enough for me gets bullied in the air far too often.

Sorry yeh i meant re-sign. Razz I can't see him doing that either though. Torres and Kuyt as you say Sticky would be ahead, as could Babel be before long. I think if we played with two strikers all the time he might've stuck around and tried to prove himself for another season but i can't see it now.

I doubt he would join Villa, and if i could choose i'd pick Portsmouth. I think he and Defoe could be a devastating partnership if played regularly, one i'd love to see materialise. Him linking back up with Redknapp again has been mooted as a possibility.

Who to replace him is the question.

I wouldn't mind us making a sneaky bid for Mario Balotelli of Inter Milan. He's only 17 (18 in August), but supposed to be a sensational Italian prospect, rather Drogba-esque from the (admittedly short) clips i've seen of him. Big and strong for sure, with a powerful finish on him. He's said to be unhappy at Inter because they've stuck him back in the reserves from being in the first squad, and is contemplating a move to Spain or England.

Granted he's very, very young, but we need someone who is willing to not be first-choice, and so you're either looking at someone with Kuyt's mentality or someone who’s either too young or too old. He could probably start if needed though... and we'd always have Babel to substitute for Torres if the latter was injured if Balotelli wasn't ready.

It's just a thought. And probably a long-shot.

I agree with that, but it hink Crouch is a much better player than Agbonlahor and Carew.

This i supposed to be a good season for Carew, but he only has 13 goals, and when you consider he plays for one of the most attacking teams in the league, and has recently been scoring a lot, it gives you an indication of how few goals he had scored this season before he hit this recent purple patch, and how many more he should be scoring.

I often find myself watching Villa thinking they need another good striker. Far too often i see Carew waste chances, Agbonlahor do nothing, or one of their muppets on the bench come on and be useless.

Y'know, if Barry did sign and Alonso left (which judging by either's form over the past season or so wouldn't be a disaster), the one benefit is the definite return we'd see from Xabi, i.e. from his transfer back to Spain.

That is where he'll most probably go - to Spain, and more than likely to one of Barcelona or Real Madrid. I wonder if Benitez could exploit Alonso's highly sought after signitature and perhaps strike a swap deal with either club for a player they're willing to let leave? Both are said to be doing a fair bit of rebuilding, so it isn't far-fetched.

The obvious choice if he moved to Barcelona would be Abidal + cash (£5m?). That would well and truly solve our left-back issue and with Lahm highly likely to move to Barca i could see him being available.

Players from Real Madrid are a bit more of a speculative effort, at least from myself (unlike you Sticky, since you follow them and would know who could be a possibility). It's going to either be a full-back or winger most probably; which leads me onto the assumedly unattainable Sergio Ramos, and then Robinho. I did read Schuster was looking to offload the latter however, although i don't really keep that up-to-date with goings on at Real.

As i say, the obvious exchange would be Abidal. But suggestions are welcome...

Check this side out Sticky...

-------------------------------------Torres

--------Babel------------------------------------....---------------Silva
------------------------------------Gerrard

------------------------Barry
----------------------------------------------Mascherano

----Abidal-----------------------------------------------------------Degen
-------------------------Agger-----.--------Carragher

-------------------------------------Reina

Subs: Itandje, Skrtel, Arbeloa/Aurelio, Lucas, Mancini/Benayoun, Balotelli, Kuyt

In
Abidal - £10m
Balotelli - £5m (?)
Barry - £14m
Degen - £0m
Mancini - £4m
Silva - £17m
-
TOTAL: £50m

Out

Alonso - £15m
Carson - £6m
Crouch - £8m
Finnan - £1m
Guthrie - £2m
Kewell - £0m
Pennant - £7m
Riise - £4m
Voronin - £2m
-
TOTAL - £45m

In fact, it's insane that we could revamp the side like that and only be out of about £5million... and at the most i could see it stretch to £15m net, if the numbers given weren't totally accurate. It is a long list of departures but i think next to all will be linked with exits - perhaps only Alonso and Crouch being wanted to stay. And if we sell them, i think maybe trimming the squad slightly, like in attack, would still greatly benefit us because of the added quality out wide.

Abidal would be a brilliant buy as he'd solve our long-running left-back issues within a flash. I kept Babel on the left 'cause i think with someone overlapping he'd be far more dangerous - he's still predictable as it is because he can only really come inside and shoot, but with someone of Abidal's calibre relentlessly overlapping on the outside then the right-back or whoever has a real problem, because Babel's options are totally opened up.

The same idea would be applied to the left with Silva cutting inside and Degen overlapping. The Swiss full-back is the notable weakness in that side, but we've reportedly signed him (or at least a Bosman player), so there's little avoiding it. Maybe it's him, maybe it's not, but i've stuck him in anyway. He looks very quick and that's always a good thing, something we need - assuming he can defend and attack too.

You could call Gareth Barry a step down from Alonso but the was the Spaniards been playing for a while now you'd struggle to have a case. Sure in his first season or so he was sensational but he's not shown that for too long - and Barry could be more suited to our Premier League bid. I don't have a problem with him coming in.

Then you've got the likes of Mancini on the bench, if he wasn't starting, and Balotelli who'd be hungry for any playing time.

In attack we'd be a little light, but i'd be content with Torres, Balotelli and Kuyt - but only because Babel in my opinion could lead the attack if needed, with Mancini taking his place. It works - just about.

If only i was Liverpool manager...

Still, it shows if nothing else that we can generate funds from selling various players who're either not good enough or want to leave.
