That's nothing. If i was really bothered about this, and really wanted to back up what i say i'd do research on and it and post a loads of statistics. AS well as writing a much more in depth analysis of the player and contenders.

I'm not bothered though, i'm tired and i don't have the time.

Surprised You should apply for Linekers job when he retires. Wink

Patrice Evra (Manchester United defender):
“Cristiano can do the same job as Maradona or Pele or Best. He can be like them. I have never seen anyone like him before in my life. But I am not surprised at what he does. You should see how hard he works in training. He is always the first one in and the last one out.”

Sir Bobby Charlton (Manchester United legend):
“He is getting better than we ever imagined. Ronaldo does things I have never seen anybody else do.”

Luis Figo (Former Portugal international):
“He has fantastic qualities and will continue to learn. Sooner or later the title of best player in the world will be his. He is ambitious and every year he wants to be better and better - even though he already is in the top bracket.”

Gael Clichy (Arsenal defender):
“He is the best player I’ve ever played against. He is quick, skilful and clever. I have a photograph at home of one of our challenges during the FA Cup semi-final in 2004, even if that afternoon United beat us.”

Gary Lineker (Ex- England striker and leading pundit):
“Watching him this season I’ve witnessed acts of manipulation of a football that verge on the physically impossible. Ronaldo is still young at 22, but I believe that if he continues on this trajectory of development, he could become one of the greatest players ever.”

Roberto Mancini (Inter manager):
“He’s a great, really great player. When he was young, he already showed he would have a sensational future and I was convinced of his potential a long time ago. Now he’s confirming himself on a really high level.”

Rafaele Paladino (Juventus forward):
“If I must be sincere, I am a crazy fan of Cristiano Ronaldo. When I can, I watch Manchester United games on TV. The Portuguese is my role-model.”

I can do the same with Messi mate, read the quotes at the beginning of this clip Wink

But i have heard many quotes from Man Utd players saying he's the best they've ever seen, trained with, played with, he can do things they've never seen, no one else can do etc. I haven't heard any like that about Tevez or Rooney, who are the other two that get a lot of attention.

If you do a search, you will get a load of Liverpool players saying Gerrard is the best in the world. Doesn't prove anything at all!

I'll tell you how a player can be the best in the world when he struggles against the best teams. That's by picking up points for your team consistently. That's what he does, and that is why Man U won the league last season. Without Ronaldo i've got no doubt they wouldn't have been anywhere near as strong last season. I think they simply would not have won the league. That was of far more value than a handful of good performances against a few top teams.

And how does that help a top team achieve the very best? You need your star players to perform against the very best else you won't achieve the very best - if he could perform against AC Milan the way he does against Fulham, or various Premier League sides, he'd propel United onto greater things. Otherwise they're going to struggle when faced with class sides or class players who turn up.

That argument above is only valid for a league system. And i agree with Benraul when he says a player who doesn't turn up for the huge matches against the best sides can't be considered the best player in the world. It doesn't matter how good you are then; you're average to the cause of winning the biggest tournaments (Champions League, European Championships, World Cup).

When you're against the very best you need an edge to come through on top, and that's where the best players earn their status - being the difference in huge matches.

FFS, stop going on. I know it means bugger all, but as it had them all sitting their in front of me i thought i might as well just post them!

Anyway Ben - it's not like Ronaldo doesn't do anything in the big games. He still is a threat, and scores goals. He did against Lyon and Milan last season, and against Roma netted twice. That's more than can be said about a lot of players.

Forget that though. I think that bit extra Ronaldo gives you over the course of a season is greater than his rivals, and that's why for me he is the best.

Such is his prolificacy, he's expected to either be amazing or score in every game. That's not the case with players like Kaka, who you're lucky to see put in a couple of good performances or score once every half a dozen games.

Best player in the world has got to be, Ronaldo.. on outstanding form and no player can match him at the moment in my opinion. Only other player would be Messi but those two i think are the best.

He will be. I really hope if we see a Barca v Man Utd that Messi is fully fit. Last season Milan v Man Utd was billed as Kaka v Ronaldo and we all know who won that one Very Happy

This time it would be Ronaldo v Messi, and again my vote would go to the Argentine wonderkid.

I think Messi will indeed be back if Barca make it to the Semis.

I'm looking forward to him taking on Ronaldo as well... And my vote is for Messi as well as of now.

Kaka no longer the 'best player in the world'
