A lot of talk has gone over the years of when will England win an international tournament. Everytime England goes to a tournament it is always among the favorites. The same we can say it happens with Spain and I have the funny felling that the fact that these two countries have the strongest leagues in the world might just have a great deal of influence in the matter. This goes on for years and always these two underachieve while teams from smaller countries like Portugal, Holland, Check Rep., Croatia even though they might not win anything they surely usely go a step further. Italy seems to do fine and they have a strong league too. What is it then? Does the Italian league have any kind of regulations that protect more home grown players? Or is all about mental attitude?

Come on guys have your say in the matter and start posting!

Regards England....they dont sing the national anthem. They may wear the shirt but they dont wear the shirt.

All I can come up with!

Very Happy

Dont. You seen how much some of them laugh when a Croatian is injured.
Just imagine how much people will laugh when an Englishman fouls a Portugese player in Euro 2008. Very Happy

I'll give my opinion , even though I don't care .

England should never have been one of the favourites in any tournament since 1970 because they don't have enough top players . The only reason they are considered favourites is because of the strength of the league and the success of English club sides in European competition .

But this strong league and club success is built on non English players . If you actually look at the number of English players in the Premiership , it is very low . The first choice XI of my beloved Everton contains 4 Englishmen . The 4 English teams in the CL semi finals 1st leg , I believe fielded only 12 Englishmen between them ( source Talk Sport ) . Liverpool only had 2 English players in their staring XI against Inter at the San Siro , and one of them has made himself unavailable .

We don't have enough top English players , playing at the highest level , on a weekly basis , to develop a pool of 40 or 50 International class players ; which is probably what you need . We end up with less than 20 class players , suffer a couple of injuries , a couple of players losing form , and before you know it we're heading into a vital qualifying game with only a starting XI , but no bench .

I suspect it is down to poor coaching at childrens' level , an emphasis on athletic ability rather than skill levels , and making kids play on full size pitches at too young an age .

As I stated in my first sentence , I don't care though . I'm only interested in club football and think International football is **** . Maybe that's an answer too . Maybe there are lots of people like me , and therefore England will always fail .

I don't care to much about international footie these days as the club game is so much better interms of quality and excitement.... England don't have the 'technique' to be a great side, we stumble about every game and most teams out play us by having a lighter and quicker touch, Croatia game was a great example of that.
