Inter coach Roberto Mancini has just confirmed that he will be stepping down as the coach of the club at the end of the season.

"I want to reveal something," he began, speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool. "I want to say it clearly to avoid any controversy.

"At the end of the season I will terminate my contract [which has four more years on it], and I will leave Inter.

"These will be my last two months on the Inter bench, and I hope to finish well by winning the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia.

"The decision has already been communicated to the players in the dressing room at the end of the match."

He insisted, however, that the step has nothing to do with the defeat to Liverpool, and that his mind had already been made up.

"This decision would have been made even if we had won. It doesn't depend on tonight's defeat," he concluded.

There have been calls for Mancini's head from certain quarters, but the timing of the announcement will have caught even the harshest of his critics by surprise.

It's a bit funny to think that he brought the scudetto bac to inter after a long wait and he is more or less asked to leave basically??

Mourinho is going to have his pick of which club he wants come summer. Inter, AC Milan, Barcelona, maybe even Real Madrid. The man is in the drivers seat. Let the bidding war start for "the Special One's" signature.

Oh, and rumours circulating are that Mourinho and Benitez are the two managers that Moratti has in mind for Mancini's successor.

Well..that lasted a long time, just after reading hes not leaving afterall!

What an idiotic thing to do, surely he should have thought it through first before coming out and saying it. What are his squad supposed to think now? Hes clearly not 100% focused or committed to the team..

Mancini: I'm Staying

Following a long discussion with president Massimo Moratti, Inter coach Roberto Mancini has made an official statement in which he takes back what he said last night and reveals he intends to lead the team next season as well.

Now it's official: Roberto Mancini will remain the Inter coach next year too. This is what he revealed himself on an official note that appeared on the club's website, following a long discussion with president Massimo Moratti.

Here are Mancini's words:

"No one more than president Moratti, all the Inter fans, and our entire squad knows what it feels like to miss out on an objective we all wanted so bad. I hope that people involved in football understand the bitterness and the anger in those delicate moments.

"A coach is always the reference point of a group, but this group also feeds on even deeper emotions. After the match, the heart of Roberto Mancini the coach came out. I thank president Massimo Moratti for having given me strength, for understanding the moment and having understood me. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding.

"The team already knows this: we are ready to fight until the last minute, with great intensity to win our third consecutive Scudetto and try to win the Champions League starting next season. Finally, I thank the extraordinary crowd which supported us until the end and applauded us when we left the pitch."

That guy is a complete joke. No one that is in a position of management like mancini would do something like that. He just showed all other coachs in europe what is main weekness is: Cant deal with pressure.

How can someone like that motivate a group of players to turn around a 2-0 disadvantage against Arsenal. The only reason is winining in italy is because every other team are playing crap including milan that only won 4 home games all season in serie A.

Just goes to show it wasn't premeditated and was in reaction to losing to Liverpool.

Well he can bribe Italian officials but I'm afraid he could not afford to bribe officials in UEFA, it cost too much.

As the great Luciano used to sing:

"La donna è mobile
qual piuma al vento
muta d'accento, e di pensiero"
